Abstract: The 2021 public dispute between Maxim Biller and Max Czollek over the latter's patrilineal Jewish identity ignited a national German debate on the boundaries of Jewishness, moving the issue from internal discourse into the public sphere, linked with German anti-Antisemitism narratives. This essay uses the Czollek-Biller controversy and the related Gerstetter debate on converts as entry points to explore the multifaceted and often conflicting definitions of Jewish identity. It surveys criteria across Jewish movements (Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, etc.) and considers ethnic, secular, hybrid (Israeli Law of Return), quasi-essentialist (Noahides, zera yisrael), and nonessentialist/self-identification models. The aim is to equip those in interreligious and intra-Jewish dialogue with a deeper understanding of these complexities. The conclusion offers practical implications for dialogue, stressing the need to acknowledge internal diversity, to analyze critically the politics of representation and inherent power dynamics (applying Cunningham's maxim through a Foucauldian lens), to prioritize narrative and lived experience, and to recognize the inadequacy of simple Jewish/non-Jewish dichotomies when engaging with contemporary Jewish life.
Mediale Konflikte um postkoloniale Studien und Antisemitismus in Deutschland
Translated Title: The increasing recognition of postcolonial studies gave rise to a revision-ist countermovement on the conservative side, which went largely unnoticed until 2019. In the course of media conflicts over anti-Semitism in recent years, however, a majority opinion emerged in the liberal and left-wing camps that fundamentally suspected and criticized postcolonial studies as antisemitic. The article traces some of these conflicts in the German public sphere (around Achille Mbembe, the so-called Second Historians’ Controversy and the reactions to October 7, 2023) and develops a model of three approaches (delimited concept of antisemitism, historical context of the FRG, Eurocentrism) to explain this hegemony.

Abstract: Die zunehmende Anerkennung postkolonialer Studien rief eine revisionistische Gegenbewegung auf konservativer Seite hervor, die bis 2019 weitgehend unbeachtet blieb. Im Zuge medialer Konflikte im Antisemitismus in den letzten Jahren bildete sich jedoch bis ins liberale und linke Lager eine Mehrheitsmeinung, die postkoloniale Studien grundsätzlich des Antisemitismus verdächtigte und kritisierte. Der Beitrag zeichnet einige dieser Konflikte in der deutschen Öffentlichkeit nach (um Achille Mbembe, den sogenannten Zweiten Historikerstreit und die Reaktionen auf den 7. Oktober 2023) und entwickelt ein Modell dreier Ansätze (entgrenzter Antisemitismusbegriff, historischer Kontext der BRD, Eurozentrismus), um diese Hegemonie zu erklären.

Abstract: Der Gaza-Krieg vom Mai 2021 hatte deutlich messbare Auswirkungen auf das Radikalisierungsgeschehen in Deutschland. Mit dem im MOTRA-Verbund zur Verfügung stehenden Instrumentarium werden in diesem Beitrag zum ersten Mal die Rückwirkungen eines Ereignisses, das außerhalb Deutschlands stattgefunden hat, dargestellt. Dabei können folgende Beobachtungen gemacht werden: Diskurse auf sozialen Medien sind in Deutschland weniger propalästinensisch als im Rest der Welt, dabei positionieren sich rechte Gruppen inzwischen mehrheitlich proisraelisch. Die Gewalteskalation zwischen Israelis und Palästinenser*innen hat im Mai 2021 zu einem deutlichen Anstieg von konfrontativem und gewaltförmigem Protest und antisemitischer Hasskriminalität geführt. Zudem können die Ereignisse in Nahost auch als Ursache für zumindest kurzfristig angestiegene antisemitische Einstellungen auf der individuellen Ebene identifiziert werden.

Abstract: Exclusionary attitudes towards out-groups are often justified by historical narratives of conflict. A large body of literature explores how making in-group victimhood narratives salient can affect attitudes towards out-groups. Much less, however, has been done to study how in-group perpetrator narratives may reduce or exacerbate animosity towards a (historically victimized) out-group. This dataset helps to fill this gap by studying antisemitism in Spain. It measures antisemitism and attitudes towards Israel, while also including a survey experiment that randomly assigns respondents into one of three treatment arms related to historical perpetratorhood and out-group victimization. Results from these data have been used in a working paper written by the dataset creators: ‘Do in-group perpetrator narratives reduce out-group animosity? Experimental evidence exploring antisemitism in Spain,’ which documents how historical narratives affect attitudes towards outgroups in Spain.

Abstract: The Israel/Palestine conflict has led to intragroup conflict amongst diaspora Jews that do and do not support Israel's actions. This paper addresses that conflict, which is shown to not just be one of differing opinions but of exactly what it means to be Jewish; it is therefore a social psychological study of contested and conflicting identities. Context to intra-Jewish conflict and the concept of the ‘self-hating Jew’ is discussed alongside the discursive approach to identity. The research question is: How is British Jewish identity managed and policed in a debate about Jewish support for Palestine? A critical discursive analysis is conducted on a Facebook discussion initiated by the British Jewish pro-Palestinian organisation ‘Na'amod’, which contains over 300 interactions. The analysis shows that there is both support and criticism of Na'amod, with a major feature being the construction, by Jews, of what it means to be a Jew, including (1) supporting Israel and (2) attending a controversial march against antisemitism; together these actions constitute appropriate ‘Jewish ethics’ so that not doing these places a Jew as deficient because of self-hate and/or stupidity. The analysis therefore shows how Jewish identity is constructed in such a way as to police Jewish people's behaviour and ensure support for Israel.

Abstract: The starting point of the article is the intense controversy in academia and politics about the definition of antisemitism. A critical review of the various proposed definitions as well as of common typologies of the forms of antisemitism reveals relatively similar problems in determining the subject matter. These problems are particularly evident in the classification of antisemitism directed against Israel. Based on these findings, it is proposed that the definition of antisemitism should be based less on individual stereotypes and more on the underlying basic patterns of anti-Jewish semantics that are common to the different variants of antisemitic world views. These basic patterns can allow for an improved analysis and evaluation of potentially antisemitic statements; the patterns can also be productive when dealing with questions such as the difference between racism and antisemitism, or the ideological specifics of the Shoah.

Abstract: Previous research on the ongoing Donbas conflict has mainly considered its political, national and historical dimensions, while studies of any religious input continue to be fragmented. This comparative study discusses how the Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities in Ukraine are narrating the Donbas conflict in digital media. In particular, the research explores the main themes and rhetorical strategies that appeared in six religious discourses during 2014–18. It also examines religious discourse in relation to the collective memory it constructs, mediates and shapes. The results demonstrate how religious organizations have shaped various images of the conflict by highlighting or backgrounding certain themes or by sacralizing events, actors and places from the collective past or present.

Abstract: Two different Kristallnacht commemorations are presently held in Amsterdam each year, in close proximity to one another and on the same day but organised by different groups. What is the reason for this? Why do people who wish to commemorate the terrible events of Kristallnacht not hold a joint annual remembrance ceremony? Does this division coincide with the boundaries between Jewish and Muslim communities? After introducing the theme, presenting the theoretical approach and describing the history of Kristallnacht commemoration in Amsterdam, this article analyses the growing discord between the two organizing groups. It relates this development to different goals, views and interests of these groups, their shifting societal positions, and to developments in the national and international context. We argue that the increasing discord does not stem so much from differences of religious ideas between the Jewish and Muslim communities, but rather from political differences of opinion that draw dividing lines within communities.

Abstract: OLAM is a network of Jewish and Israeli organizations working in the fields of global service, international development, and humanitarian aid. Many of OLAM’s partners, alongside other Jewish and Israeli organizations, are on the ground in Ukraine and in adjacent countries providing support and services to those who have been caught up in the war in that region. These organizations include legacy providers of humanitarian aid such as World Jewish Relief (WJR) and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC); Jewish engagement organizations catapulted into humanitarian action such as Chabad and Hillel in the Former Soviet Union; and Jewish-led grassroots networks providing personalized help.

This report seeks to draw out preliminary lessons from the Jewish and Israeli efforts that have mobilized in response to this humanitarian emergency. Although the crisis remains ongoing and will likely continue to evolve
over the coming months and years, this report seeks to provide initial insights on how Jewish groups have
collaborated during the first three months of this crisis, and how they can collaborate most effectively in its next
phases. It also seeks to capture wisdom gained through responses to this crisis that can inform how the Jewish
community can respond to future crises in other parts of the world.

Abstract: Scholars, journalists, and activists alike have offered a variety of explanations to understand the high incidence of COVID-19 among Haredi Jewish communities in the United States and abroad. Despite their differences, each assumes that Haredi Jews are inherently collectivistic. This article challenges this assumption and contends that COVID-19 has amplified pre-existing anxieties about the lack of proper social cohesion and solidarity within Haredi Jewish communities. Abstract: Byford and Billig examine the emergence of antisemitic conspiracy theories in the Yugoslav media during the war with NATO. The analysis focuses mainly on Politika, a mainstream daily newspaper without a history of antisemitism. During the war, there was a proliferation of conspiratorial explanations of western policies both in the mainstream Serbian media and in statements by the Yugoslav political establishment. For the most part such conspiracy theories were not overtly antisemitic, but rather focused on the alleged aims of organizations such as the Bilderberg Group, the Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission. However, these conspiracy theories were not created de novo; writers in the Yugoslav media were drawing on an established tradition of conspiratorial explanations. The tradition has a strong antisemitic component that seems to have affected some of the Yugoslav writings. Byford and Billig analyse antisemitic themes in the book The Trilateral by Smilja Avramov and in a series of articles published in Politika. They suggest that the proliferation of conspiracy theories during the war led to a shifting of the boundary between acceptable and non-acceptable political explanations, with the result that formerly unacceptable antisemitic themes became respectable. This can be seen in the writings of Nikolaj Velimirovic, the Serbian bishop whose mystical antisemitic ideas had previously been beyond the bounds of political respectability. During the war, his ideas found a wider audience, indicating a weakening of political constraints against such notions.

Abstract: This book is the only comprehensive treatment in any language of a rather “exotic” Balkan Jewish community. It places the Jewish community of Bosnia and Herzegovina into the context of the Jewish world, but also of the world within which it existed for around five hundred years under various empires and regimes. Abstract: Travelogue – On the Contemporary Understandings of Citizenship among European Jews – title and subject of Theodor Barth’s thesis – encompasses six books with ethnography based on a multi-sited fieldwork, in Central- & Eastern European Jewish communities.


The books are concerned with aspects of their own conditions of production, from fieldwork research to writing, alongside the ethnographic subject of the Travelogue: the conditions of Jewish communities (mainly in cities of Central and Eastern Europe) in the last half of the 1990s (1995-99).

The books root the model experiments developed throughout the Travelogue in different ethnographic contexts.

Book 1 (Spanning the Fringes – Vagrancy to Prague) is a traveller’s tale with quite contingent, serendipitous, and very short-term trips to sample Jewish life in St. Petersburg, Vilnius, Warsaw, Kiev, Bucharest, Sofia, and Budapest.

Book 2 (The Minutes of the ECJC) is a commentary and analysis around a conference which the candidate attended in Prague in 1995 of the European Council of Jewish Communities (ECJC). It focuses on the political work and changing strategies of the ECJC. This book establishes some of the terms of the problems of community-Jews in Europe.

Book 3 (The Zagreb Almanach) is a description and analysis of the candidate’s stay with the Jewish community of Zagreb, focusing on a place, a green room, the community centre itself—this is the closest to a traditional site of community living in his ethnographic research.

Book 4 (The Books of Zagreb and Sarajevo) provides a contemporary and contextualized reading of a key Jewish ritual complex—the Passover Seder and its text, the Haggadah. This is a cultural object for systematic iteration and commentary, on which to articulate in depth a number of his insights gained more diffusely from observation. Among all the books, book 4 is the one intensive piece in which the textual analysis defines a process through which the candidate intends to sensitise the reader to how pattern can emerge from details.

Book 5 (Thirteen Kisses—a Manual of Survival From Sarajevo) relates a testimonial account of how the activist group La Benevolencija functioned in Sarajevo humanitarian relief during the Bosnian War of 1992-95. The candidate hopes to demonstrate a slow transition from wartime testimonials in the presence of an anthropologist, to recognition in the urban commonwealth in the aftermath of the war. He also invites the reader to consider the particularities of survivor testimonies and contrast these to how the war-zone was perceived from the outside.

Book 6 (The Account of the Lifeline) provides an understanding of a search and accountability model developed by La Benevolencija—in co-operation with the Joint—during the war in Bosnia (1992-95). It consolidates and expands the account of the Jews in Sarajevo and their humanitarian actions, through the candidate’s work on archives of the Joint (American Joint Distribution Committee) in Paris.

The six books of the Travelogue are rounded up in three concluding sections, containing 1) a synopsis of the findings across the books (Frames – Modeling Disordered Systems), 2) an account for the process of visual modeling throughout the books (Design – Choices and Aggregates), 3) a bibliographic presentation in which various sources influenced the conceptual choices and experiments that are made throughout the manuscript are discussed (Bibliography: Reflective Readings). In this way, the candidate hopes to retrace his steps from the findings, via the crafting of the volume back to the ranks of colleagues and readers.

Polish-Jewish intergroup communication: The mediating role of personalized cognition.

Abstract: The goal of the present study was to test the mediating role of personalized cognition (perception of others as similar to self) in the impact of intergroup communication programs onthe improvement of intergroup attitudes. In Study 1, consistent with the contact hypothesis, the participants (N=190 Polish students) showed an increase of liking when they had moreopportunities to meet and to communicate with outgroup members. This effect was media-ted by the perception of outgroup as similar to self. Thus the present results support the personalization theory of intergroup contact. Study 2 (N=97 Jewish students) replicated theresults of Study 1 in an experimental model, with random assignment to contact and no-contact conditions, and demonstrated the mediating role of personalized cognition in theeffectiveness of intergroup communication programs. Both studies reveal the psychologicalnature of the positive effects of intergroup communication and suggest the direction for future real-life interventions.
History as an obstacle: Impact of temporal-based social categorizations on Polish-Jewish intergroup contact

Abstract: Two studies examined the role of temporal-based social categorizations for attitude change during intergroup contact between Polish and Jewish students. In Study 1 (N = 190 Polish students), a cross-sectional analysis showed that contact focused on contemporary issues had positive effects on both outgroup attitudes and perceived similarity to the outgroup. No such effects were observed when groups talked about past issues. Abstract: In this deeply personal essay, Leora Tec, the daughter of Holocaust survivor and Holocaust scholar Nechama Tec from Lublin, Poland, examines the causes of past and present divides among many in the Polish Jewish community, both Jews and non-Jews. She shows how factors such as: silence (both personal and institutional or governmental); ignorance; an overemphasis on Polish rescue; a competition of victimhood; and an overemphasis on the separation between Jews and non-Jews before the war, have all deepened this chasm. And she demonstrates—using her own experience encountering the memory work done by those at Brama Grodzka-NN Theatre Centre as an example—how these divides can be bridged by collective, artistic, and individual remembrance. This remembrance holds space for what is absent or incomplete, while valuing the “fragments” of history. Most of all, she shows how forging human connection in the present, continues the work of remembering the past with reverence, and has enabled her to find a connection to Poland. Ultimately, she concludes that the human beings building the bridges are themselves the bridge.

Abstract: Technically, Israel is not the only official Jewish homeland in the world. In the Far East of Russian Siberia there still exists the Jewish Autonomous Region (JAR) of Birobidzhan. Beginning in 1928 the Soviet Union set aside a territory larger than Belgium and Holland combined and considerably bigger than Israel, for Jewish settlement, located some five thousands miles east of Moscow along the Soviet-Chinese border, between the 48th and 49th parallels north latitude, where the climate and conditions are similar to Ontario and Michigan. Believing that Soviet Jewish people, like other national minorities, deserved a territorial homeland, the Soviet regime decided to settle a territorythat in 1934 would become the Jewish Autonomous Region. The idea was to create a new Zion–in a move to counterweight to Palestine – where a “proletarian Jewish culture” based on Yiddish language could be developed. In fact, the establishment of the JAR was the first instance of an officially acknowledged Jewish national territory since ancient times: the “First Israel”. But the history of the Region was tragic and the ex-periment failed. Nevertheless, Birobidzhan’s renewed existence of today and the revival of Jewish life in the post-Soviet JAR are not only a curious legacy of Soviet national policy, but after the break-up of the Soviet Union and the worldwide religious rebirth represent an interesting case-study in order to studysome challenging geographic pro-blems, and interethnic relations.

Abstract: This article discusses Peter Kosminsky’s miniseries The Promise (2011) and investigates the intense public responses it engendered in Britain. The first part of the article explores how the miniseries takes the lead from the liberation of Belsen to engage with issues of British national self-perception. Drawing on the notion of ‘postimperial melancholia’, the article argues that The Promise explores important issues related to Britain’s past and present, in particular the lasting heritage of Empire. The second part engages with the intense reception of the miniseries among opinion makers and the general public, with many critics seeing The Promise as aimed at delegitimising the State of Israel. In thus doing, the article situates the debate within broader discussions on the supposed relationship between anti-Zionism and “new anti-Semitism”, and more specifically discussion of the role of anti-Zionist Jews. The debate around The Promise is a case study for the exploration of two related controversies. The first one pertains to Jewish/non-Jewish relations, in particular regarding the international role of Israel in the twenty-first century. The second one is more specifically infra-Jewish and revolves around the issue of which subjects are legitimate to speak out as Jews and in the name of which values.

Abstract: This article discusses two academic events devoted to Holocaust studies in which participants became unconsciously involved in re-enacting the behaviour respectively of Holocaust perpetrators, and of victims turning aggressively on each other in a manner reminiscent of ghetto life. In one conference an out-group was created and silenced, while in another an individual became the object of projected guilt and was victimized. These projections were mediated by implied competition between film, sculpture and literature as the medium best suited to Holocaust memorialization. A description of each event is followed by analyses of the dynamics involved, with the support of psychoanalytic literature. Factors which led to the author’s twenty-year delay in publishing the article, which was drafted in 1995, are also examined psychologically.

Abstract: Recent contributors to this journal have sought to radicalise sociology by exploring how the discipline might expand political imaginaries and take up non-reductionist notions of everyday ethics. In a related move, sociologists are exploring the performative potential of sociological practices and sensibilities, while anthropologists are reframing the relationship of ethnography to theory. This article contributes to these projects by focusing on an acute case in which an expanded political imaginary is urgently needed; the tensions between political solidarity and ethical violence in transnational communications around Palestine–Israel. Drawing on an ethnographic study of conflicting activist groups in Britain, I highlight a profound ethical problem: that claims for justice appear to entail a violent refusal to acknowledge ‘the other’. The article examines how the dualistic logics structuring sociological imaginaries have occluded and reproduced this impasse, and focuses on an attempt by activists to create non-violent modes of solidarity. Articulating a role for ethnography in opening up this alternative, I show how responsive and creative sociological methods can bring new languages, imaginaries and political formations into being.

Abstract: In responding to friction with mainstream society, minority groups follow a number of strategies ranging from accommodation to confrontation. This article examines the interaction between contemporary British society and two non‐Christian religions, the Anglo‐Jewish community and Sahaja Yoga. It notes that while these two groups are utterly different in most other respects, they pursue a similar strategy of adopting a low profile in relation to the larger culture. This strategy has the advantage of engendering the minimum amount of controversy and ensuring the greatest freedom of action possible, yet allowing them to maintain their distinctive religious identities. The article concludes with a discussion of the reasons why both groups adopt low, rather than high, profiles and of the ways in which such strategies may change over time.

Abstract: Over the course of the ongoing war in Ukraine, the identity of the global Russian-speaking Jewish community was put to the test. The conflict in Ukraine marked the first time in the history of Russian-speaking Jews that every expression, blog or Twitter post, and opinion article were recorded on the World Wide Web. This readily available data enables us to reconstruct the information climate that surrounded Russian-speaking Jews. The present article explores the sway of this climate on the political discourse of Jewish elites in Ukraine, Russia, and Jewish Russian-speaking diasporas between 2014 and 2015. Our findings suggest that identities of these groups are multilayered, but not hierarchical. Moreover, the elites’ common ethno-cultural Jewish identity coexists with distinct political affiliations. The allegiance of minorities to host societies is a well-known phenomenon. However, its mechanisms have yet to command sufficient research interest. Is it fear, prudence, genuine attachment to the country of residence, or other factors that stand behind the minorities’ commitment? This paper fuses thematic maps with content analysis to show that the “infosphere” is a key to understanding the position of Jews toward host regimes and their co-ethnics in other nation-states.

Abstract: The prevalence of anti-Semitism in Russia is well known, but the issue of race within the Jewish community has rarely been discussed explicitly. Combining ethnography with archival research, Jewish Russians: Upheavals in a Moscow Synagogue documents the changing face of the historically dominant Russian Jewish community in the mid-1990s. Sascha Goluboff focuses on a Moscow synagogue, now comprising individuals from radically different cultures and backgrounds, as a nexus from which to explore issues of identity creation and negotiation. Following the rapid rise of this transnational congregation—headed by a Western rabbi and consisting of Jews from Georgia and the mountains of Azerbaijan and Dagestan, along with Bukharan Jews from Central Asia—she evaluates the process that created this diverse gathering and offers an intimate sense of individual interactions in the context of the synagogue's congregation.

Challenging earlier research claims that Russian and Jewish identities are mutually exclusive, Goluboff illustrates how post-Soviet Jews use Russian and Jewish ethnic labels and racial categories to describe themselves. Jews at the synagogue were constantly engaged in often contradictory but always culturally meaningful processes of identity formation. Ambivalent about emerging class distinctions, Georgian, Russian, Mountain, and Bukharan Jews evaluated one another based on each group's supposed success or failure in the new market economy. Goluboff argues that post-Soviet Jewry is based on perceived racial, class, and ethnic differences as they emerge within discourses of belonging to the Jewish people and the new Russian nation.

The author provides an overview of Jewish history in the former Yugoslavia, with an emphasis on the lives and activities of women. Until the Holocaust, the diverse Jewish community prospered and Jewish women's organizations multiplied and grew. Jewish women were active in organizing and providing aid, in supplies and medical work, in every Balkan war. After the decimation of the Holocaust, only a fraction of the community remained. Yugoslavia enjoyed relative freedom of movement and freedom of religion under communism, however, and eventually some women's organizations were rebuilt and were able to continue their benevolent work throughout the modern conflicts, even at the high point of violence in Sarajevo. Each of the new countries continues to have its own women's organizations, even in smaller communities like Split, where the Jewish population is only 120.

Although Jews have been residents of Bosnia-Herzegovina for 500 years, with the country’s new constitution they have disappeared from official records into the residual category of Others. This article considers how, nonetheless, the Jews of Sarajevo persist as an active community and a named group even as its identity is being defined by others. The interrelated questions, “Whose Jews? Whose Bosnia? Whose Europe?” have no neat, finite answers while Jews-as-Others and Bosnia as an ethnically divided and overdetermined, EU-supervised country remain precariously perched on unsettled and unsettling configurations of rights and power.
Antisemitism and Jewish Identity in Serbia After the 1991 Collapse of the Yugoslav State

Abstract: The paper first describes the Jewish community in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which consists of the two federal units of Serbia and Montenegro. There is no Jewish community in Montenegro; only a few Jews have ever lived there. In Serbia there are only 3,500 Jews in nine local communities affiliated with the Federation of Jewish Communities of Yugoslavia. Jewish identity is a voluntary ethnic self-identification; some members of these communities are not of Jewish origin, but have integrated into the community through their marriage ties.

The paper then focuses on the heritage of antisemitism in Serbia. After 1945, i.e., from the time Communists came into power until the final disintegration of the Yugoslav state, one may distinguish three stages: 1945–1967, a period characterized by no public display of antisemitism; 1967–1988, in which antisemitism disguised as anti-Zionism; and 1988–1991, which saw the process of "republicanization" and functionalization of Jews. The paper describes the re-emergence of traditional antisemitism in Serbia since 1991, and the misuse of Jews for the Serbian nationalistic agenda as part of the post-communist development in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

It can be concluded that antisemitism in post-communist Yugoslavia, although peripheral, is a constant phenomenon.
