Abstract

Translated Abstract

This DeZIM Working Paper examines the narrative of "imported antisemitism" within the context of a post-migrant society in Germany. Using societal reactions in Germany to the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023 as a starting point, the so-called import thesis is subjected to empirical scrutiny and analyzed with regard to its socio-political function. The findings demonstrate that antisemitic attitudes cannot be attributed to any single group defined by origin or religion but are shaped by complex interactions involving migration experiences, political orientations, memory cultures, and social environments. Political party affiliation emerges as a particularly significant factor, alongside the structural entanglements of antisemitic and anti-Muslim sentiments. The study argues for a transnational, context-sensitive, and memory-sensitive approach to empirical antisemitism research, which requires the development of new survey instruments. In doing so, it contributes to a more nuanced analysis of group-focused enmity in an increasingly pluralized society. The analyses are based on data from the NaDiRa.panel, a representative survey in Germany. The panel is conducted on a regular basis and provides systematic insights into the attitudes and experiences of various population groups in Germany regarding racism and discrimination. The study presented here draws on data provided by a total of 6,295 respondents....
