2020 jährt sich der Tag der Befreiung von Auschwitz zum 75. Mal. Seit 75 Jahren müssen Überlebende und deren Nachfahren, muss die Welt, müssen die Deutschen mit dem Zivilisationsbruch leben, den der Name "Auschwitz" markiert. Das Buch folgt dieser Geschichte.
Die Überlebenden des Holocaust konnten über das Geschehene oft nicht sprechen. Doch die Traumata des Erlittenen wirkten auch im Stillen und gerade dort: Überlebende und ihre Kinder beschwiegen das Unfassbare, um einander zu schützen und dem Schrecken nicht oder nicht noch einmal begegnen zu müssen.
Anders die Generation der Enkel. Sie stellt den Großeltern nicht nur Fragen, auf die sie auch Antworten bekommt. 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. For 75 years, survivors and their descendants, the world, and Germans have had to live with the rupture of civilization that the name "Auschwitz" marks. The book follows this story.
The survivors of the Holocaust were often unable to speak about what had happened. But the trauma of what they had suffered also had an effect in silence, and especially there: survivors and their children kept quiet about the incomprehensible in order to protect each other and not have to face the horror or not have to face it again.
The grandchildren's generation is different. They not only ask their grandparents questions to which they also get answers. They also experience Auschwitz as a historical fact that has been described and analyzed, interpreted and processed in the 75 years that have passed since the camp was liberated. But what does Auschwitz mean for this third generation?
This book brings together testimonies from grandchildren of Auschwitz survivors. They are often touching, sometimes shocking and always thought-provoking reports about how powerful the events of that time still are in people's lives today. Auschwitz was not just yesterday, Auschwitz is today - still and forever.
