Translated Abstract

The article cites different voices in the debate on the slaughter of farm animals without stunning (so-called ritual slaughter): position of the Episcopate, Polish political scene (including Civic Platform and Polish People’s Party, United Poland, Palikot’s Movement, Democratic Left Alliance), Polish authorities, results of opinion polls, and the statements of representatives of the Jewish and Muslim communities in Poland. The axis of misunderstanding in this discourse seems to be different interpretation of several aspects of the same problem: 1) slaughter ritual as a religious order versus cultural relic; 2) the rights of minorities versus modern standards of animal protection (the suffering of animals during religious slaughter is far greater than the killing by stunning – no evidence for this argument, any form of killing is inhumane); 3) religious and economic liberty versus contemporary public morality
