Abstract: Les manifestations de nationalisme et d’antisémitisme qui accompagnèrent la transition furent souvent interprétées en termes de retour du même. En témoignent des expressions chargées en connotations primordialistes telles que « retour des nations et du nationalisme », « réveil des nationalismes », « retour des vieux démons ». Effet « réfrigérant » de la domination du Parti-État, « vide idéologique » postcommuniste, telles furent, dans un premier temps, les explications communément invoquées pour en expliquer la réactivation. C’est oublier que l’effondrement idéologique du communisme en Europe du Centre-Est a largement précédé celui du Mur de Berlin, et que les passions nationalistes n’avaient jamais été mises au frigidaire sous le régime communiste. Instrumentalisées par certaines élites du Parti comme par des fractions de l’opposition, elles n’ont pas attendu l’effondrement du Mur de Berlin pour se déployer. Reste que leurs manifestations récentes sont d’autant plus difficiles à interpréter en bloc que l’hétérogénéité sociologique de l’Europe du Centre-Est s’approfondit depuis la désintégration de l’Empire soviétique et que le concept même de nationalisme désigne parfois des réalités sociales et politiques diamétralement opposées. En partant de l’idée que « le renouveau du nationalisme en Europe de l’Est est moins la cause de la situation actuelle que sa conséquence », nous montrerons à partir de l’exemple polonais, que celui-ci participe en réalité d’un phénomène classique de réinvention d’une tradition…
The role of the Holocaust in antiracist education: A view from the United Kingdom

Abstract: The failure of antiracist educators in the United Kingdom to engage seriously with the issue of anti‐Semitism provides the background to this article. With specific reference to the Holocaust, it argues that a lack of interest among antiracists in how the subject is taught has had a number of adverse consequences. These include the forfeiture of a potent vehicle for reinforcing and advancing the aims of antiracism and the loss of the unique contribution that a study of the Holocaust can make to an understanding of racism. Lack of interest in the Holocaust has also meant that inadequate consideration has been given to the consequences for antiracist education of the subject being taught badly. To obviate these drawbacks, the article advocates a definition of racism that can embrace anti‐Semitism and thereby facilitate the involvement of antiracists in teaching about the attempted annihilation of European Jewry.

Abstract: In this community study of orthodox-affiliated Jews in London the social circumstances of anxiety were examined. By contrast with previous work on women in London, danger and early adversity bore only a weak relationship with anxiety in this sample. Eventfulness had the strongest relationship with anxiety of all the circumstances examined. Women were more likely to suffer from borderline anxiety than were men, but there were no gender differences in case anxiety. Women had more eventful lives than men but this could not solely account for gender differences in anxiety. Findings suggest the importance of cultural factors in aetiology.
The costs and benefits of boundary maintenance: stress, religion and culture among Jews in Britain

Abstract: This paper examined stress among two groups of orthodox Jews suggested to differ in the strength of the boundary of their religious group. Comparisons were made between the two groups, and with urban and rural groups studied by other researchers. Proportions of boundary-maintenance events (events whose threat had been caused or exacerbated by Jewishness) and of severe events, and proportions and rates of regular, irregular and disruptive events were examined. Boundary-maintenance events were higher among the more religiously orthodox affiliated group, and among whom religious observance was indeed reported to be higher. It was suggested that conditions of higher boundary maintenance would be associated with higher rates and proportions of regular events and with lower rates and proportions of irregular and disruptive events. Generally, the analyses supported this expectation. Boundary-maintenance events themselves were somewhat less severe, though not less likely to be irregular or disruptive than other events. Depression was shown to be unrelated to boundary-maintenance events and (surprisingly) unrelated to contextual threat when the effects of irregularity-disruption were controlled. Depression was, however, strongly related to irregular and disruptive events. The results are compared with those of related work, and suggest that the general lowering effect of affiliation to a religious group may be partly explained by the effects of boundary maintenance, which involves stress, but of a less depressogenic kind than the disruptive stress associated with conditions of low/no boundary maintenance. The findings have implications for understanding the relations between culture and mental disorder.

Abstract: In many parts of the world today, ethnic identity is not merely the product of socialization, but is the result of conscious choice on the part of the individual. Nowhere is this more evident than in the countries of the former East Bloc, where sweeping political changes have removed many barriers to the expression of ethnic sentiment. The present work represents an attempt to build a generalizable model of ethnic identity construction by identifying the major influences on group conceptions of ethnic identity and describing the process by which those conceptions change over time. The primary case study focuses on the construction of ethnic identity among Polish Jews born after World War II. Conclusions are based primarily on data collected in interviews with members of that community. Traditionally, theories of ethnicity have posited a unity of beliefs, values or behaviors within an ethnic group. In contrast to traditional theories, the model proposed here focuses on major areas of conflict within groups, positing that conflict over issues deemed relevant in some degree to all members of the group is the driving force behind ethnic change. In choosing to identify, members of ethnic groups are presented with a set of issues, which are both important and controversial for the group, on which they feel obligated to take a position. The set of controversial issues relevant to a given group at a given time, the model posits, is determined by three factors: differences between cohorts arising from their formative experiences; differences between subgroups arising from conflicts between communal institutions; and differences between subgroups arising from their varied responses to input from outside groups. Whereas works on ethnicity in the field of political science have tended to focus on nationalism, or the pursuit of statehood by ethnic groups, this model treats nationalism and organized political behavior in general as a potential outgrowth of ethnicity, but not as its necessary byproduct.

Abstract: Het aantal gemelde antisemitische incidenten en de in de media verschenen meldingen over antisemitische voorvallen is niet meer dan vorig jaar.

Meer dan vorig jaar heeft extreem-rechts van zich laten horen, met name door hun voortdurende pogingen demonstraties op touw te willen zetten, de gebeurtenissen rondom CP’86 in Schiedam en Rotterdam. Binnen extreemrechts radicaliseert vooral CP’86. De CD wenste om die reden zelfs geen fusie met CP’86. De veroordeling van de CD gold uitspraken uit de jaren 1989-1991. De special over 25 jaar discriminatieverboden in Nederland van het Landelijk Bureau ter bestrijding van rassendiscriminatie schrijft dat de extreemrechtse netwerken actief zijn, maar dat de groep klein is. Op sommige plaatsen kan er echter heel wat aan de hand zijn. De afgelopen 25 jaar is veel vooruitgang geboekt in de strijd tegen racisme. Er moet echter nog veel gebeuren, zoals een effectiever optreden tegen racisme en antisemitisme op de voetbalvelden en regelgeving voor de bestrijding van deze fenomenen op internet.

Il part d'un constat economique, celui de l'extraordinaire croissance, dans les annees 70 a 80, d'un marche, qui vingt ans auparavant n'etait qu'embryonnaire : le marche des produits cacher. L'etude des pratiques alimentaires juives en modernite, en tant que "fait social total", permet de saisir l'organisation materielle d'une consommation symbolique. Les observations conduite dans le domaine de la cacheront informent sur les juifs de france en dehors de ce seul domaine, mais aussi sur la place de l'alimentation dans toute societe humaine. Cette these s'articule sur deux axes : d'une part croire-pratiques-identites et d'autre part economie-institutions-pouvoir. Les consommateurs, effectifs ou potentiels, dans leur pratiques et leurs representations, etablissent un certain rapport aux textes prescriptifs, face a cela, les acteurs economiques et institutionnels, agissent selon des normes de la tradition, mais aussi selon des logiques propres, logiques de survie financiere et de pouvoir. Ces imbrications se mettent en place pour produire une configuration particuliere nommee economie du croire. Ce concept rend compte de la facon dont deux rationalites, l'une religieuse, l'autre economique, se font face, tantot s'affrontant, tantot se renforcant l'une l'autre. Si l'ethique juive prone un equilibre ideal entre les interets economiques et la necessite d'une solidarite collective, assuree par la centralite accordee au don, qu'en est-il dans les faits ? n'y a-t-il pas une tentation du veau d'or, c'est a dire une inversion entre les fins et les moyens, entre l'ethique et la technique, entre l'objet et le sens ?

Abstract: The attachment of Diaspora Jews to Israel can no longer be taken for granted. In recent years, there has been a radical shift from a community-wide consensus concerning attachment to Israel, which was probably as secular as it was religious, to a more narrowly based attachment linked to religiosity and to personal experience. At the same time, there is declining support for Israel-oriented charities. How Much English Has the British Education Act Required? The Secretary of State for Education vs. a Hasidic Yiddish-speaking School

Abstract: Alone among British immigrant minorities, the Hasidim, an Ultra-Orthodox Jewish group, maintain their own complete school system, in which males devote themselves entirely to Hebrew religious texts- taught entirely in their heritage vernacular, Yiddish- save a couple of hours at the day's end for statutory secular study of English and maths. The Hasidim insist that this adequately prepares their youth spiritually and economically for adulthood. A complaint filed by the Department of Education & Science in 1983 that a Hasidic school was not providing 'suitable preparation for adult life in Britain' under the Education Act led in 1985 to an application in the High Court for a judicial review, but following the judgement the Department withdrew its action without explanation. The Hasidim have since maintained their curriculum unchanged, and no further complaints have been filed. This paper analyses the views expressed in the case, in the light of interviews with Hasidim and British educational policy on immigrant language and culture.

Abstract: Im Frühjahr 1990 lud Lothar de Maizière die vom neu aufflammenden Antisemitismus in der UdSSR bedrohten Juden ein, in die DDR zu kommen. Diese großzügige Einladung wurde mit der Wiedervereinigung seitens der Bundesregierung zwar in der Tendenz zurückgenommen, gleichwohl wurde allen russischen Juden, die bis zum April 1991 eingereist waren, der Status eines Kontingentflüchtlings gewährt. Deutschland gewährt den russischen Juden die Einwanderung, um Wiedergutmachung zu leisten und sich von Schuldgefühlen zu entlasten. In Politik und Öffentlichkeit wird die Einwanderung russischer Juden als Beweis dafür interpretiert, daß es wieder möglich ist, als Jude in Deutschland zu leben. Aus der Sicht Israels dagegen, der US-amerikanischen jüdischen Institutionen und auch der jüdischen Bevölkerung in aller Welt wird die Migration nach Deutschland mißbilligt. Wer als Jude nach Deutschland, in das Land des Holocaust geht, verletzt eine moralische Norm. (Seligmann 1991, Silbermann/Sallen 1992, Mertens 1993, Runge 1995) Damit ist eine Fragestellung des Projekts »Russisch-jüdische Migranten im Vergleich« markiert, nämlich lassen sich aus den Aussagen, mit denen die russischen Juden die Migration und ihren Aufenthalt in Deutschland begründen, Hinweise auf die Wirksamkeit der genannten Norm finden, oder müssen wir davon ausgehen, daß sie für die russischen Juden keine Bedeutung hat

Abstract: Should our Readers be asked were they would investigate the nature of Jewish identity, theymight be somewhat surprised at the question for they would think it is a matter of fact to do soamong the Jews, wherever else? Nevertheless, Jewish identity of non-Jewish intellectuals is to be discussed below. Given the fact that two Jewish schools were recently established inBudapest, we decided to study the identity forming function of these schools by means of narrative life history interviews. While making the interviews we found that many non-Jewish parents took their children to these schools and the interviews also suggested that these parents have a kind of positive Jewish identity or consider some of their features Jewish or Jewish-like. We do not have the common case here, when, for example, non-Catholic childrenwere sent to convent schools for the good reputation of the school while overtly keeping their own religion. The families discussed in our study take their children to a Jewish school not asthose belonging to some other religion (even though they are actually non-Jewish) but on thegrounds of culture and values common (or considered to be common) with Jewry.

Abstract: Since 1990 considerable numbers of Jewish emigrants have resettled in Germany, predominantly in Berlin. Under certain, not very stringent, conditions, persons with Jewish ancestry receive full refugee status and are entitled to all associated practical and financial assistance. Research reveals different categories of immigrants to have markedly different ways of dealing with their new surroundings and the support offered by German institutions. Some conform to the expectations of the German authorities and the Jewish Community whereas others show more or less deviant behaviour. The present article examines these different strategies from the dual perspective of the immigrant's habitus and capital on the one hand, and the German context on the other. It is concluded that four types of immigrants may be discerned.

Abstract: Il s'agit dans cet article d'éclairer les pratiques alimentaires d'une population juive originaire de Tunisie, installée en milieu urbain, dans le quartier de Belleville, à Paris (XXe arrondissement), depuis une quarantaine d'années. A partir d'observations et de matériaux collectés dans les familles, l'auteur retrace la réalité des pratiques alimentaires dans leur rapport à plusieurs pôles culturels. Le pôle tunisien, avec une prédominance de plats « traditionnels » lors des repas festifs, le pôle français avec une récupération de notions clés un temps catégorisées comme propres à la cuisine française (haute cuisine, légèreté, modernité), et désormais appliquées à la cuisine tunisienne, ainsi qu'un maintien de certaines pratiques alimentaires (le petit déjeuner français) ou l'adoption d'autres (le « steak-frites » ou le « poulet rôti »). Le pôle juif qui oppose les générations quant à l'observance des règles de la cacherouth, et un pôle « exotique » qui témoigne de la capacité de cette population à adopter certaines pratiques alimentaires de ses voisins. Ces pratiques illustrent la difficulté de parler d'essentialisme identitaire, au profit d'identités culturelles aux multiples facettes.

For little or no additional data-gathering expense, the previously underutilized random digit dialed non-Jewish respondents of a Jewish population survey can provide valuable information that can be utilized to triangulate towards the true values of variables about the Jewish community such as intermarried households. More objective measures of concepts such as assimilation and Jewish continuity can be explored and developed by incorporating data on non-Jewish informants.

The American Jewish Committee Board of Governors adopted the following policy statement and action plan on dealing with the widely-proclaimed crisis of Jewish Continuity. They state that the goal of continuity efforts should be development of knowledgeable Jews who can make informed choices about the nature of their commitment to Judaism and the Jewish people. In a free society, many will choose to leave, and for that reason some losses are virtually inevitable. Our goal should be to ensure that the choices Jews make are informed choices rather than out of ignorance. More knowledgeable Jews are, in all likelihood, going to choose to be more committed Jews.
