Abstract
Identidade e Memória na Comunidade Israelita de Lisboa é um estudo antropológico, sociológico e histórico de três gerações de judeus portugueses. Este livro aborda a história dos judeus sefarditas e asquenazitas portugueses através da reconstrução oral das suas histórias de vida e de família ao longo de três gerações, fruto de um trabalho de campo etnográfico extenso, pesquisa bibliográfica e documental realizada entre 2001 e 2003. As memórias das histórias de vida e de família das três gerações de judeus portugueses remontam aos tempos dos Éditos de Expulsão espanhol e português do século XV bem como ao período entre a I e a II Guerras Mundiais e às perseguições de que foram alvo na Rússia, Polónia, Letónia e Ucrânia. Com esta investigação pretendeu-se compreender o que é ser judeu português na actualidade. O caso dos judeus portugueses da Comunidade Israelita de Lisboa ilustra a diversidade de percursos e memórias marcantes que os tornam uma parte integrante da sociedade portuguesa, enquanto minoria étnica, enriquecendo o nosso conhecimento sobre o tecido social europeu e a construção da identidade nacional portuguesa na contemporaneidade.
Translated Abstract
Identity and Memory in the Jewish Community of Lisbon is an anthropological, sociological and historical study over three generations of Portuguese Jews. This book is about the history of the Sephardim and Ashkenazim Portuguese Jews through the oral reconstruction of their life and family histories over three generations, the outcome of an extensive ethnographic fieldwork, bibliographic and documentary research done between 2001 and 2003. The memories of life and family histories over the three generations go back to the Portuguese and Spanish Royal Edicts of Expulsion of the fifteen century, and to the period between the I and the II World War and the persecutions that happened in Russia, Poland, Latvia and Ukraine. The aim of this study was to understand the meaning of what it is to be a Portuguese Jewish nowadays. The case of the Portuguese Jews of the Jewish Community of Lisbon illustrates the diversity of life-journeys and memories that define them as part of the Portuguese society, enriching in this way our knowledge about the European social diversity and the construction of the Portuguese national identity in contemporary times.
