Demographic Trends Among the Jews in the Three Post-Soviet Slavic Republics
Paper presented at the 14th World Congress of Jewish Studies (Jerusalem, July 31 – August 4, 2005)
To understand the post-Soviet Jewish population trends in the three post-Soviet Slavic Republics of the former Soviet Union (FSU) we have prepared new estimates of numerical dynamics. We shall study the aging of the Jewish population in the Russian Federation, Ukraine and Belarus based on the results of the first post-Soviet censuses. Based on the results of the 2002 Russian census and special processing of birth certificates of that year we shall analyze the changing marriage pattern of the Jews and their recent fertility decline.
