Abstract

Translated Abstract

Eighteen years ago, between autumn 1999 and spring 2000, a questionnaire-based sociological survey of Hungarian Jewry was carried out. After the statistical data gathering of the post-Holocaust years, this was the first comprehensive research which gave a roughly precise demographic and social-economic picture of Hungarian Jews, and their relationships to Jewishness and Jewish institutions. this database however slowly became out-of-date. since the earlier study, a new Jewish generation emerged, and the Hungarian and international environment also changed substantially. this led Hungarian and international Jewish organisations to form a consortium to support a repeat of the earlier research from 18 years ago. the members of the consortium are the American Jewish
Joint Distribution Committee, the Budapest Jewish Community (BZSH),the Unified Hungarian Jewish congregation (EMIH), the Alliance of Jewish Congregations in Hungary (mazsihisz), the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation, the Mozaik Jewish community hub, Szochnut, Szombat Foundation, and the Action and Protection Foundation (tev). Support for the research also came from the Central European University Jewish Studies research programme and the Keren Hayesod Hungária Foundation. This report publishes the findings of the research.
