Abstract

This chapter considers the presence of antisemitism in Scottish football. In doing so, the chapter reflects on how the Israeli–Palestinian conflict is manifest in football in Scotland. Of primary concern is how this conflict is represented in the sports print media and how opposing ‘sides’ are therein constructed. This cleavage is mainly manifest through the long-established ‘football’ rivalry between Celtic and Glasgow Rangers. In recent years many Celtic supporters have waved the Palestinian flag on match days while numerous Rangers fans have opposed this by waving the flag of Israel. The chapter draws upon the results of a small-scale qualitative survey conducted amongst Celtic supporters to gain insights regarding the presence of Palestinian flags, and with regards to possible antisemitism therein and in Scottish football generally. Although the display of Palestinian flags at Celtic represents an interesting focus for enquiry, including regarding possible antisemitism there, the survey (and other Celtic fan expressions) demonstrates a clear belief amongst Celtic supporters that they are pro-Palestinian, not antisemitic.
