Abstract: This article provides an original and up-to-date overview of the main trends in Czech online antisemitism by analysing aggregated data from multiple surveys made by the author, which cover two decades spanning from the pioneering era of the Czech internet in the late 1990s to 2022. The study has noted some profound changes in the main sources of contemporary Czech antisemitism – from various flavours of the far-right in the mid-2000s to conspiracy narratives without a clear Left-Right distinction since the mid-2010s. This new generation of antisemitic websites was found to have a longer lifespan and significantly larger audiences while operating with a higher degree of self-confidence from all regions of the country. A strongly pro-Kremlin inclination was found to be a significant feature of almost all antisemitic websites in the country to the extent that they were directly impacted by the February 2022 government crackdown against “pro-Kremlin disinformation platforms”. The aftermath of this crackdown is discussed in the final chapter.

Abstract: Publikace chce představit některé příklady spikleneckých teorií v krátkém chronologickém průřezu, přičemž z mnoha typů konspiračních teorií volíme ty, které mají vztah k antisemitismu. Tato kniha si klade za úkol představit některé z mechanismů, které vedou k produkci teorií spiknutí, upozornit na jejich význam a na jednotlivých příkladech ukázat fascinující a matoucí svět tohoto dosud málo zkoumaného žánru. Publikace chápe konspirační teorie jako specifický sociální fenomén a současně literární žánr. K jejich výzkumu přistupuje kombinací metod historie, etnologie a mediálních studií.

Abstract: Výzkum antisemitismu není jen reflexí jedné staré zášti. Víme-li, že skrze antisemitismus dochází k promítání vlastních negativních charakterových vlastností na podobiznu „Žida“, pak analýzou této podobizny můžeme zpětně odhalit to, co si naši předkové i současníci přáli ukrýt, spálit a pohřbít. Reflexe antisemitismu tak poskytuje širší kontext pro pochopení pozadí historických událostí či motivů konkrétních aktérů.

Publikace autorského kolektivu Katedry blízkovýchodních studií a Katedry historických věd ZČU v Plzni mapuje nejstarší kořeny protižidovské nenávisti, rasové ideologie a honby za „čistotou krve.“ V dalších kapitolách pak tato kniha poukazuje na úlohu antisemitismu v revolučních proměnách Francie 19. století a problematizuje představu o antisemitismu jakožto „iracionální zášti nevzdělanců“. V českém kontextu se pak autoři ptají, zda lze i v České republice nalézt doklady o spolupráci islamismu s neonacismem. Knihu uzavírá unikátní svědectví pamětnice, která měla možnost poznat každodenní důsledky antisemitismu během druhé světové války a poválečného období.

Abstract: Despite the last thirty years of political stability and democratic establishment, antisemitism has not fully disappeared from the Czech Republic. This article aims to deepen our understanding of not only the visual symbols and ideological links, but also of the people who create and disseminate these artworks. Having collected and coded visual antisemitica for the last ten years, the author documents the contrast between traditional depictions of Jews in contemporary Czech folklore (or in what is considered ‘tradition’) and the more esoteric symbolism of the conspiracy theories and political extremism. It is argued that, while the mainstream ‘traditional’ depictions of Jews have retained stereotypical features, the extremist scene has moved forward to a more abstract expression, which pushes our methodological and legal definitions of ‘visual antisemitism’ to, and beyond, their limits.

Antisemitism in the Czech Republic: Understanding Current Trends

Abstract: The Czech Republic is considered to be a country with low levels of antisemitism. This does not mean, however, that anti-Jewish attitudes have disappeared from Czech society. While it is not an immediate threat, the phenomenon persists in certain specific political and cultural circles. The first section of this article examines the major characteristics of Czech antisemitism through statistics, polls, and other indicators. The second section explores the ideological sources and visual forms of Czech antisemitism. Unlike Western Europe and the United States, the Czech Republic faces challenges involving more traditional forms of antisemitism, such as conspiracy theories and even the blood-libel, which do not respect partisan political divisions and often lead to unexpected alliances.
