Drawing on personal reflections and academic research, it explores the sense of rupture experienced by individuals and organizations engaged in interfaith dialogue, emphasizing the emotional and political challenges of navigating a polarized geopolitical and intercommunal climate. The events are framed as a moment of heightened tension, intensifying long-standing narratives of conflict, particularly around antisemitism and its intersection with perceptions of Muslim communities. Religious "Jewishness": Biographical narrative in a closed group

Abstract: "Religiosity" is one of the most popular and frequently used concepts in contemporary professional discourse of the sociology of religion. However, the study of this phenomenon is usually reduced to some quantitative surveys involving a multidimensional measurement model of religiosity or to polls concerning religious affiliation. Meanwhile, the content and structural components of religiosity of different groups elude the researcher's attention. Inclusion of biographical narratives in the methodological toolkit makes it possible to identify collective and individual components of religiosity. However, its use in studies of religious groups and actors involves a number of methodological difficulties, which are not always explained in corresponding manuals. This article offers a detailed analysis of the most complex aspects of the methodology of the biographical narrative: search for respondents, method of conducting such interviews, stages of interviewing. Each stage of explanation is illustrated by examples from the author's research of the religious Jews of St. Petersburg (2015). The analysis of biographical narrative procedures draws on the daily life of Jewish religiosity, the specific chronotope of its manifestations and the "us-them" disposition.

Abstract: Since 2014, JPR's European Jewish Research Archive (EJRA) has consolidated social research on post-1990 European Jewish populations within one single, freely available, online resource. EJRA is designed to be a service to community leaders, policymakers and researchers, as well as a resource to help inform the European Jewish research agenda going forward.

Drawing on an innovative methodology, this report presents a detailed statistical analysis of EJRA's holdings. Through this analysis, we are able to pinpoint specific strengths and weaknesses in social research coverage of particular issues in particular countries.

The report finds a clear increase in the research coverage of European Jewish populations since 1990. The amount of coverage in each country is broadly in line with the size of each country’s Jewish population. The majority of the research is produced by researchers whose work is not confined to this field, with a small ‘core' of committed Jewishly-focused researchers. Academia provides the primary base for researchers, but there has been a significant increase in recent years in research reports produced by non-academic institutions, particularly those concerned with monitoring antisemitism.

Approximately 20% of EJRA items concern antisemitism and this proportion has more than trebled since 1990. Research on ‘living’ Jewish communities - as opposed to research on antisemitism and Holocaust remembrance - is far less developed in countries with small Jewish populations. At 8% of the collection, Jewish education appears to be underdeveloped in all European countries with the exception of the UK.

Drawing on the research findings, the report goes on to raise questions regarding possible strategic priorities for European Jewish research for discussion by researchers and organisations that sponsor research. In particular, we ask how and whether research across Europe could be better coordinated and what countries and topics require further support to develop a stronger research infrastructure.
Holocaust Memorials in Central and Eastern Europe: Communist Legacies, Transnational Influences and National Developments

Abstract: The article analyses selected Holocaust memorials in several Central and East
European countries. Using the approaches of historical and visual sociology, it
identifies processes and agents that shaped the present-day memorials during
communism and after. These were: commemoration by Jews; memorialization,
marginalization, suppression and the obliteration of Jewish victimhood by the
communist authorities; making minor or substantial changes to the existing
monuments after communism and developing them; and creating new Holocaust
memorials both public and private, and by domestic and foreign agents. The article
concludes that the Holocaust memorials in the region are primarily a result of
legacies of communist times. They were also shaped by transnational influences.
By and large they are national developments.

Abstract: Article critically analyses approaches that Slovak sociologists have been using in their analysis of antisemitism in Slovakia after 1989. The article describes quantitative methods used by Slovak sociologists and suggests need of a complex approach to research of antisemitism. Author argues that modern antisemitism is de-judaized, while Slovak researchers focus more on a research of prejudices and stereotypes toward Jews. The research of antisemitism in Slovakia is fully dominated by a Bogarduss scale of social distance while different relevant research methods are not used by Slovak experts. Moreover, in the process of interpretations of public opinion surveys experts do not take into account the so-called escaping answers of respondents and attempts to run away from answering sensitive questions. Socio-psychological research, reflecting authoritarian personality, anomy, alienation and ontological insecurity of common people as sources of anti-Semitism, is rather rare in Slovakia. Consequently, quantitative research of antisemitism in Slovakia can be evaluated as insufficient. De-judaized perspective of anti-Semitism and even of Jews themselves in a Sartre´s sense is remaining one of the greatest challenges for sociologists researching antisemitism in Slovakia.

Abstract: In my paper, I would like to focus on the achievements of researchers studyingthe Jewish community and culture in Poland. In recent decades, there havebeen numerous publications in this area. It must be admitted that most ofthem are historical works. However, I would like to draw attention to slightlydispersed studies in the field of social sciences (sociology, psychology, peda-gogy). Who are the researchers who deal with Jewish themes? What are thecommon and individual elements of their scientific approaches? Are all ofthese elements part of the discourse of research on the ‘renaissance of theJewish community and identity’? I would like to look at the explorations ofboth researchers connected with the Jewish environment and ‘outsiders’ (in-cluding young foreign researchers interested in Polish Jews). The scope oftheir research is therefore quite diverse and includes issues such as: buildingJewish identity and institutional structures; religious life and the activities ofreligious and secular associations; relations with dominant culture; informaleducation, Jewish education and family upbringing.
Struggling to Establish Jewish-Muslim Dialogue in a Paris Synagogue after the 2015 Attacks

Abstract: Both engaging in and researching interreligious dialogue initiatives after the 2015 Paris attacks among people who associate strongly with Jewish and Muslim communal structures provides a valuable framework for considering one of the central puzzles in the sociology of religion, namely, social transformations that apply not only to the observed but also to the observer. However, scholarship on interreligious dialogue does not have any well-established research episteme from which to proceed analytically. Academic doxa places interreligious dialogue initiatives in the realm of the “practical” and at times doctrinal, but not the rigorously analytical. These initiatives are often referred to in the English-speaking world as “interfaith,” a word which encompasses a vast array of voluntarist encounters across time and space. The underlying assumption of the academy is that researching dialogue initiatives is a form of “action-research,” a results-oriented mode of scholarship constrained by the necessity to obtain “best practice,” which is of little prestige or value to academics and intellectuals (Bielo 2018: 28). Moreover, since these initiatives have thus far often involved top-down practices, receiving their impetus from the state or dominant religious structures, they have lacked societal legitimacy and therefore have been of little interest to sociology.

Abstract: Environ 90% des demandes de conversion adressées aujourd'hui aux institutions juives émanent de conjoints non juifs de "couples mixtes" désirant homogénéiser religieusement leur famille. Formative sociology and ethico-political imaginaries: opening up transnational responses to Palestine–Israel

Abstract: Recent contributors to this journal have sought to radicalise sociology by exploring how the discipline might expand political imaginaries and take up non-reductionist notions of everyday ethics. In a related move, sociologists are exploring the performative potential of sociological practices and sensibilities, while anthropologists are reframing the relationship of ethnography to theory. This article contributes to these projects by focusing on an acute case in which an expanded political imaginary is urgently needed; the tensions between political solidarity and ethical violence in transnational communications around Palestine–Israel. Drawing on an ethnographic study of conflicting activist groups in Britain, I highlight a profound ethical problem: that claims for justice appear to entail a violent refusal to acknowledge ‘the other’. The article examines how the dualistic logics structuring sociological imaginaries have occluded and reproduced this impasse, and focuses on an attempt by activists to create non-violent modes of solidarity. Articulating a role for ethnography in opening up this alternative, I show how responsive and creative sociological methods can bring new languages, imaginaries and political formations into being.

Abstract: This article explores reactions to the rise of anti-Semitism in France in the early 2000s. From the perspective of the sociology of intellectuals, it seeks to understand why intellectuals chose to take up such an issue. We begin by painting a portrait of the intellectuals who publish on this burning issue. We highlight common social properties, but also substantial distinctions between them. Thus, while writing about anti-Semitism is very largely (but not exclusively) the work of Jewish intellectuals, their profiles and trajectories vary. Secondly, we differentiate between discourses and counter-discourses on anti-Semitism. The first ones are intellectual productions devoted to discussions and scientific controversies on the forms taken by this resurgence of anti-Semitism – in particular around the thesis of the “new anti-Semitism”. The second ones are intellectual productions that are more broadly devoted to denouncing this thesis and the intellectuals behind it. What emerges is a fragmented intellectual arena polarized around the issue of Jew-hatred in contemporary French society.
