Abstract: n ethnically divided consociational societies small minorities opt for different channels of political participation. They may do so to increase the importance of their group or challenge the consequences of limited participation channels, thus navigating the exclusion-amid-inclusion dilemma. However, it remains unclear how and why individuals belonging to small ethnic minorities with limited political opportunities, engage in politics. This article aims to explore and explain the levels of political participation of Jews and Poles in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It seeks to understand why some members of these communities choose to participate actively while others engage only in voting practices or refrain from getting involved. This is outlined using four different criteria: whether the act communicates a message about an individual’s political preference, the potential degree of conflict, the effort put into the activity and the degree of cooperation with other people involved in the action. The qualitative analysis of this study relies on a series of semi-structured interviews and focus-groups conducted among the two ethnic communities.

Abstract: This book is the first look at Jews in Wales to draw extensively on oral history, bringing the voices of Welsh Jews into a field of history that has largely focused on formal studies rooted in synagogues and institutions. Cai Parry-Jones focuses in particular on the impact of World War II on Wales's Jewish population, as well as the importance of the Welsh context in shaping the Welsh-Jewish experience. The book concludes with a look at the numerical decline of Wales's Jewish communities through the twentieth century and their situation in the early years of the twenty-first.

Abstract: This contemporary oral history, based on interviews conducted over an 18-year period, is the first of its kind in English. The interviews, some repeated with the same subjects over years, demonstrate how the Jewish community of Dijon has evolved over time in response to challenges both internal and external.

The authors provide an introduction to the series of interviews as well as a detailed history of the community. A chronology, a map of Dijon, and photos of many interviewees are included. The book also provides an update on recent events in the community, a suggested reading list, and a bibliography.
Steel City Jews: A Study of Ethnicity and Social Mobility in the Jewish Population of the City of Sheffield, South Yorkshire

Abstract: This is a report on a census of Jews living in Sheffield, United Kingdom. Sheffield was considered by the staff of the Research Unit, both in its history and present situation, to be fairly representative of many of the Anglo-Jewish Provincial communities in industrial centers within the range of 1,000-2,500 persons. The staff states that they had a general impression of the recent changes which had occurred in such communities, but thought it necessary to obtain a complete understanding and quantitative knowledge of the present situation. In order to meet this need it was felt that a community census - similar to those carried out in the U.S.A. - should be attempted. Sheffield was not the initial choice for such a census, but other communities placed so many political difficulties that it was decided to use a centre where the local leadership was cooperative and realized the value of such information. The Sheffield community was particularly concerned with the apparent decline of the community due to the emigration of young people and what appeared to be a serious decline in the birthrate. At the same time the proportion of elderly persons appeared to be increasing. The survey finds that the relatively rapid progression in socio-economic status, made by Sheffield Jews in two or three generations, is an intriguing sociological phenomenon and certainly a subject for further investigation.

Abstract: Being Jewish in Scotland was a small-scale inquiry carried out by the Scottish Council
of Jewish Communities (SCoJeC), with funding from the Scottish Government, to
find out more about the variety of experience of Jewish people in Scotland, and
encourage them to identify the issues that are important to them. It has helped
SCoJeC to build a better understanding of what affects the sense of security of
Jewish individuals and communities, and thus to establish what matters to the
community, and improve our support for Jewish people in Scotland. The process
of carrying out the inquiry has itself had the result of strengthening networks
and social capital in the community, and has helped to provide support to Jewish
people throughout Scotland.
It is intended that the findings should also prove useful in assisting statutory
and voluntary organisations and agencies such as the Scottish Government,
the NHS, local authorities, education authorities, employers, faith groups, and
others to support and respond more effectively to the needs and concerns of the
community.
More than 300 Jewish people, from Shetland to the Borders, participated in Being
Jewish in Scotland, either by attending one of the 30 focus groups and events
held as part of the project, or by completing a survey or participating in a oneto-one
interview

Abstract: This study explores the importance of food and the negotiation of kosher laws in the context of strategies to maintain an individual and collective Jewish identity among a British Reform Jewish community in a non-metropolitan area. Based on interviews with active members of the local synagogue, it explores the challenges to maintaining Jewish life in a small, disparate community remote from any major Jewish settlement. In the interview data, food emerges as a major point of reference for defining identity and for positioning members of the community in relation to religious traditions. Food observance further serves as a means of defining boundaries within as well as outside the community. This discussion raises several important issues: the place of religious observance in modern societies, the question of membership and boundaries of communities, the diversity of contemporary Jewish Reform observance and, finally, the specific role of food and foodways in negotiating these challenges.

Abstract:

The author provides an overview of Jewish history in the former Yugoslavia, with an emphasis on the lives and activities of women. Until the Holocaust, the diverse Jewish community prospered and Jewish women's organizations multiplied and grew. Jewish women were active in organizing and providing aid, in supplies and medical work, in every Balkan war. After the decimation of the Holocaust, only a fraction of the community remained. Yugoslavia enjoyed relative freedom of movement and freedom of religion under communism, however, and eventually some women's organizations were rebuilt and were able to continue their benevolent work throughout the modern conflicts, even at the high point of violence in Sarajevo. Each of the new countries continues to have its own women's organizations, even in smaller communities like Split, where the Jewish population is only 120.

Abstract: This multiple-perspective ethnographic case study explores the current meanings of the Jewish cultural heritage for the Jewish community of Košice in Slovakia and its urban environment. Based on interviews with experts, and narrative interviews, archival research, media monitoring, object-analysis, and participant observation, the author’s analysis focuses on the city’s synagogues which emerge as narrative spaces triggering discourses of conflict between different interest groups and witnessing social practices that address cultures of remembrance.
