The presence of ‘foreigners’ in European cities is often depicted as an important and central problem for society. The largely orthodox Jewish community in Antwerp forms via its language, religion, cultural background and economic activity a ‘cluster of identities’ that marks a ‘difference’ between Jewish and other inhabitants of the city. This contribution focuses on this segregation, searching for definition, interpretation and historical explanation throughout the twentieth century. What is integration and how can we place the Jewish community of Antwerp in this sociological framework?
Aujourd’hui, la présence des ‘étrangers’ dans les villes européennes est souvent décrit comme un problème important et central pour la société. Par sa langue, sa religion, son background culturel et son activité économique, la communauté juive d’Anvers, qui est d’un caractère très orthodoxe, a formé un ‘cluster d’identités’ qui marque une ‘différence’ entre les habitants juifs et autres dans la ville.
