Abstract
Die Vernichtung des europaischen Judentums als ein bzw. das Verbrechen des Nationalsozialismus ist zum Kulturprodukt Holocaust geworden. Aus kulturwissenschaftlich orientierter Sicht nahert sich das Buch der Musealisierung dieser Geschichte und Kultur der judischen Minderheit in Europa im Rahmen der nationalen Erinnerungskulturen der USA und Deutschlands. Die Autorin zeichnet die offentlichen Debatten um die Realisierung der Museen in Washington und Berlin, die Umsetzung der Erinnerung in der Architektur und den Ausstellungen sowie die reprasentativen Funktionen, die die Museumsprojekte im gegenwartigen politischen Kontext erfullen, detailliert und in vergleichender Perspektive nach. Dabei hebt sie die vehementen Unterschiede in der Realisierung eindrucklich heraus. Beide Museen sind nationale Gedenkstatten, die auf verschiedene Weise und im Kontext unterschiedlicher nationaler Erinnerungskulturen der Vernichtung der europaischen Juden gedenken. Das Memorial Museum in Washington ist judischer und amerikanischer Gedenkort zugleich. Das Judische Museum Berlin versteht sich als deutsches Geschichtsmuseum und Ort zur Bewahrung der Erinnerung an die nationalsozialistischen Verbrechen sowie an die vernichtete deutsch-judische Kultur zugleich.
Translated Abstract
The extermination of European Jewry as one or the crime of National Socialism has become the cultural product of the Holocaust. From a cultural studies perspective, the book focuses on the musealization of this history and culture of the Jewish minority in Europe within the framework of the national cultures of remembrance in the USA and Germany. The author traces in detail and from a comparative perspective the public debates surrounding the realization of museums in Washington and Berlin, the implementation of memory in architecture and exhibitions, and the representative functions that museum projects fulfill in the current political context. She impressively highlights the vehement differences in the realization. Both museums are national memorials that commemorate the extermination of European Jews in various ways and in the context of different national cultures of remembrance. The Memorial Museum in Washington is both a Jewish and an American memorial site. The Judisches Museum Berlin sees itself as a German history museum and a place to preserve the memory of National Socialist crimes and the destroyed German-Judiciary culture.
