Dans une démarche à la fois historique et sociologique, l’ouvrage retrace l’histoire de l’école Maïmonide, une école qui allie éducation républicaine et éducation juive.
Cette école a vu le jour dans la région parisienne en 1935. Elle a alors traversé les traumatismes et les bouleversements qui ont agité la vie et l’identité des Juifs en France tout au long du XXe siècle. Elle a vu passer des personnalités aussi différentes qu’Elie Wiesel, Serge Klarsfeld, Daniel Sibony ou Daniel Cohn-Bendit dont la mère y a été intendante.
Aujourd’hui encore, elle poursuit le projet de transmettre à la fois une éducation républicaine et une éducation juive.
L’auteur, ancien élève de « Maïmo », a voulu en savoir plus sur sa propre école. Pour cela, il s’est plongé dans les archives et est parti à la recherche de témoignages écrits ou oraux afin de faire revivre ce qui semblait être au départ une pure utopie.
