Abstract: In the last decades, witness to the Shoa has taken on various forms, from story-telling, to trial depositions and evidence collection, from negotiations for compensations, to "second-generation" accounts. Over the years, what used to be a first-hand narrative, the story of what had been actually seen and felt, has become the account of what have been heard. Since witness to the Shoa, in its various forms, has come to be considered as fundamental "evidence" of the tragedy, second-hands accounts may prove fragile documents to this end. What, therefore, are witness narratives? Are they merely legal documents? How do they stand as historical documents? Will Shoa narratives still have a future while witnesses slowly dwindle and disappear?

Abstract: Italy holds most of the world's cultural heritage, and its Jewish cultural heritage is also of the greatest importance. Only after Emancipation did Italian Jews begin to pay attention to their material heritage – synagogues, cemeteries, libraries, archives, silver furnishings, textiles and artifacts. Their preservation came to be understood as a means of preserving the identity and history of the Jews. After the war, and especially since the early 1980s, the importance of preserving the Jewish cultural heritage as a memory not only for Jews, but for the whole country, began to be acknowledged not only by Jews, but also by the general population, including the Italian authorities.

In this process of incessant transformation, Jews acquired their specific patterns of understanding reality. The way of transmitting memories, and their contents, are in general one of the main features of Judaism. Abstract: The history, demography and sociology of Jews in Italy over the 150 years since Italy's political unification are discussed in the global framework of modern and contemporary Jewry. The Italian experience in general, and that of Italian Jews in particular, can only be explained by examining the various cultural spaces that gave rise to the nation. The peculiar ecology of Italian Jews is based just upon this difficult balance of interdependence and originality. Across the range from full social acceptance to total exclusion, Italy's Jewish communities experienced roles of either forerunners or late joiners vis-à-vis demographic, socioeconomic, and cultural change. Observed models of Jewish identification reflected a wide range of options linking personal values with associative networks within the peculiar constraints of the Italian duopoly of Catholic public religion and national secularization. The dialectics of Jewish identity versus Italian assimilation was irreversibly shaken up by the emergence of a powerful third pole of reference – Israel. The dilemmas, hopes and fears that prevailed at the outset of national unity were not superseded 150 years after, and the need for a clarifying dialogue is more alive than ever.

Abstract: In this essay I discuss some historical and cultural paths that led Jews in Italy to transform the perception and practice of their religious tradition over the past two centuries. After a preliminary proposal concerning a definition of the notion of «religion», I identify the tools used by Italian Jewish communities in the field of education and in transforming their rituals. A few paragraphs are then devoted to a few specific events that I believe influenced the understanding and practice of Jewish religion in Italy. The purpose is to give an account of some of the most representative trends of the development of religious observance in present-time Italy.
