Abstract: A recent incident of antisemitic trolling in Germany provides the basis for the analysis of methods and goals of antisemitic trolling through a combination of qualitative discourse analysis and digital textual analysis with the help of the digital tool suite Voyant. The analysis is based on a case study that the authors of this chapter witnessed live. At the online event of the Kompetenzzentrum gegen Antisemitismus und Rechtsextremismus. Angriffe auf die Demokratie [Competence Center Against Antisemitism and Right-Wing Extremism. Attacks on Democracy] on September 16–17, 2020, trolls aggressively disrupted the associated YouTube live chat with antisemitic messages. The analysis of the chat messages from this event carried out here examines the extent to which the trolls used various antisemitic topoi to shift the discourse in the YouTube Live Chat to ultimately delegitimize the event.
Tertiary Antisemitism in Social Media Posts of Germany's Alternative für Deutschland

Abstract: This chapter analyzes social media posts of Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe on May 8, 2020. With the help of the mixed-methods software MaxQDA we developed a code system that identifies antisemitic cues. As a result of our analysis, we formulate a definition of tertiary antisemitism to extend the established concepts of primary and secondary antisemitism. In our research we find that the AfD uses social media strategically to communicate a revisionist interpretation of World War II and the Holocaust by employing antisemitic cues, rather than explicit expressions of antisemitism. Further we identify four rhetorical strategies present in the AfD’s social media communication that normalize, mainstream, and vindicate antisemitism.

Abstract: Der vorliegende Beitrag diskutiert die Verbreitung von antisemitischem Hass in sozialen Medien vor dem Hintergrund der ihnen zugrundeliegenden Technologien. Dazu werden zunächst Befunde aus dem Forschungsprojekt „Antisemitismus und Jugend“ zu Erfahrungen von nichtjüdischen Jugendlichen in Deutschland mit antisemitischen Inhalten in den sozialen Medien sowie zu ihrem Umgang mit diesen vorgestellt. Mit Social Media Literacy und Dekonstruktion schlagen wir zwei effektive Strategien zur Intervention gegen antisemitische Hate Speech in den sozialen Medien vor.

Abstract: Der Beitrag stellt erste Befunde aus dem Forschungsprojekt „Antisemitismus und Jugend“ vor. Narrative Interviews mit jungen Menschen wurden diskurs- und biographieanalytisch ausgewertet, um Positionierungen junger Menschen zu Antisemitismus und Erfahrungen mit antisemitismuskritischer Bildungsarbeit zu beschreiben. Der vorliegende Beitrag fragt, welche Räume der Auseinandersetzung mit Antisemitismus die Jugendlichen beschreiben. Neben der expliziten Ablehnung von Antisemitismus zeigen die Analysen, dass sich junge Menschenauf Jüdinnen*Juden vor allem als Opfer des Holocaust beziehen und Holocaust-relativierende Äußerungen in den Interviews treffen. In ihrem Sprechen wird antisemitismusrelevantes Wissen reproduziert. Vor diesem Hintergrund zieht der Beitrag Schlussfolgerungen für eine antisemitismuskritische Bildungsarbeit.
Ambivalence and Contradictions in Education against Antisemitism: Exploring the Views and Experiences of Young Germans

Abstract: This paper presents results of the qualitative study “Antisemitism and Youth,” which examines young non-Jewish Germans’ knowledge of and experiences with antisemitism, as well as their perceptions of educational efforts against it. The study explores the contradictions between persistent antisemitism in Germany and intensive work to
counter it. Through the analysis of interviews with young Germans, the study examines their understanding and representations of Jews and Jewish life. It reveals that young Germans’ views are shaped by narratives of strangeness, victimhood, guilt, and criticism of antisemitism. While most of the participants express firm opposition to antisemitism, they lack experience in identifying and deconstructing it. This article highlights some of the study’s key findings and presents conclusions for antisemitism-critical education.

Abstract: The Alternative für Deutschland’s (AfD) entry into the German Bundestag in September
2017 represented a shift in post-1945 German political tradition and the social acceptance
of a party from the far right. During the election campaign, the AfD relied heavily on
the social media mostly using Facebook to spread its agenda. This research on the AfD’s
attitude toward National Socialism, the Holocaust and antisemitism on Facebook shows
that the party utilizes antisemitic stereotypes to defame political opponents and that further,
the AfD instrumentalizes events from the Third Reich to elevate perceived positive aspects
and strives to rehabilitate certain facets of National Socialism. The article first shows how
the AfD uses Facebook to spread its unfiltered political views. Then, three case studies
posted by the AfD will be analyzed. Additionally, the comments under the Facebook posts
are taken into account to show how their followers perceive antisemitic posts made by
AfD officials.
