Abstract: This article addresses the question of women’s agency in traditionalistreligion, through a study of self-narratives by women in the Orthodox Jewishcommunity of Antwerp, Belgium. Women who study or work outside the bound-aries of their community were interviewed about their experiences in negotiatinggender ideologies by moving in and between the ‘secular’ and ‘religious’ spacesof higher education, work and home. Various subject positions emerged in termsof either rejecting, separating or reconciling dominant community norms regard-ing women’s proper role with personal trajectories of self-realization and individ-ual autonomy. On the one hand, the results confirm the possibility of women’sagency within religious-traditionalist settings and in that sense subscribe to somerecent feminist theoretical challenges to secularism. However, it is argued that theyounger generation faces more restrictions in negotiating religious and seculargender-role expectations in the Antwerp context. Their prospects depend on thedynamic between global fundamentalist tendencies and local liberal state policiesof multicultural accommodation.

Abstract: Dit artikel beschrijft de interculturalisering van de Vlaamse jeugdhulpverlening ten aanzien van de strikt ortho-doxe joodse gemeenschap. Door middel van een situationele analyse, een methodologie geënt op de Sociale Werelden Theorie, gaan we na vanuit welke problemen Vlaamse hulpverleners en de strikt orthodoxe joodse gemeenschap interageren en welke posities ze daarbij hanteren. We onderzoeken wat deze interacties (on)mogelijk maakt, om zo meer inzicht te krijgen in deze specifieke van interculturalisering. Vlaamse hulpver-leners lijken er andere maatschappij- en integratiemodellen op na te houden dan de strikt orthodoxe joodse ge-meenschap en de beide partijen lijken dus ook andere strategieën te gebruiken om interculturele hulpverlening mogelijk te maken. Dit artikel gaat in op de gevolgen hiervan en stelt enkele verbeteringen voor.

Abstract: In deze bijdrage wordt een synthese gebracht van de resultaten van twee socioculturele
antropologische onderzoeksprojecten in de Antwerpse joodsorthodoxe
gemeenschap die betrekking hebben op de ‘eigenheid’, ‘emancipatie’ en ‘integratie’
van vrouwen. Eerst wordt de betekenis van vrouwelijke religiositeit vanuit het
standpunt van strikt Orthodoxe, waaronder chassidische, vrouwen belicht. Terwijl in
het publieke en institutionele religieus domein mannen de paradigmatische ‘orthodoxe
jood’ zijn, is door de sacralisatie van het dagelijkse leven, de religieuze rol voor
vrouwen niet minder omvattend of belangrijk, maar vooral gesitueerd in de private en
huiselijke sfeer. Ik beargumenteer dat deze vorm van religieuze en gegenderde
eigenheid vanuit een antropologisch en gender-kritisch perspectief niet eenduidig
geïnterpreteerd kan worden in termen van ‘onderdrukking’ dan wel ‘emancipatie’. Het
tweede onderzoeksproject behandelt de problematiek van joodsorthodoxe vrouwen
(gaande van strikt tot modern orthodox) in Antwerpen die religieuze gendernormen
overschrijden door te studeren of werken in de omliggende seculiere maatschappij. De
levensverhalen onthullen zeer verschillende trajecten van vrouwen die de ontmoeting
met de ‘buitenwereld’ dikwijls verrijkend vonden maar ook wel interculturele
conflicten ervoeren. Er wordt besloten dat behoud van culturele eigenheid, naast
emancipatie en integratie van binnen uit de joodsorthodoxe gemeenschap niet
onmogelijk is, maar dat dit minimaal wederzijds dialoog en begrip vereist.

“Not Us, but You Have Changed!” Discourses of Difference and Belonging among Haredi Women

Abstract: Feminist research into the position and participation of women in contemporary fundamentalist and traditionalist identity movements shows how essentialist ideologies of sexual difference are often deployed in critique of western secular liberal feminism. In this article the author draws a comparison between discourses of belonging according to studies of ba'alot teshuvahin the USA (female “returnees” to an Orthodox Jewish lifestyle), and her own interviews with “frumfrom birth” women (raised as haredi) in the strictly Orthodox Jewish community of Antwerp, Belgium. Whereas for the former, a rhetoric of choice, essentialism, and religious ideologies of female superiority appeared important, for the frum-born women, gender is more a question of orthopraxis and religious role equivalence. Nevertheless, the author argues that for the strictly Orthodox Jewish diasporic community in question, an increase in gender conservatism, with particular notions of female sexuality and modesty, goes hand in hand with isolationism vis-à-vis the surrounding secular society.
