Abstract: À partir du cas des synagogues non orthodoxes en France dans les années 2000, cet article s’intéresse à l’autorité religieuse telle qu’elle est produite par les interactions entre fidèles. Les marques de déférence et d’admiration entre habitués distinguent dans chaque synagogue un petit groupe d’experts religieux, dont les caractéristiques varient d’une synagogue à l’autre. On montre comment cette expertise est produite par des dispositifs locaux de socialisation, et par le rapport critique qu’entretiennent les membres de ces synagogues à l’égard du judaïsme orthodoxe.

Power, Identity, and Organizational Structure as Reflected in Schools for Minority Groups: A Case Study of Jewish Schools in Paris, Brussels, and Geneva

Abstract: This article compares the linkages between organizational structure, power
relations, and group identities within the private schools operated by the
francophone Jewish communities of Brussels, Paris, and Geneva.1 A school’s
organizational structure and balance of power reflect its identity and its
conceptual world. That is, its organizational structure reflects the forces operating
within the school system, the power wielded by various actors, and the
relationships existing between the system and the actors. A school’s balance
of power is thus a practical manifestation of its inherent political inclination
and identity. The main concern in this article is to analyze the ways in which
the structural organization of the school influences the allocation of power
and the school’s identity, and how this identity affects structural aspects of the
curriculum

Abstract: Soviet Jews endured administrative, political, and societal anti-Semitism for years, and by the early 1960s the rich political tradition of Eastern European Jewry had been almost totally lost. In the post-Soviet period, a Jewish institutional infrastructure began to appear and develop, leading to the political advancement of a Jewish communal elite. However, the political institutionalization of the Jewish movement has become somewhat controversial and there is still some unfinished business as to its ultimate character.
