Between History and Politics: the Swedish Living History project as discursive formation

Abstract: Texts and events regarding the Swedish Living History project in the years 1997–2008 are studied in the sense of a discursive formation, ‘Living History’. The article focuses on political aspects of changes, antagonism and discursive positions in public debates about ‘Living History’, whereby politics, journalism and academic history are seen as interacting parts. An examination of 651 press articles leads to the conclusion that ‘Living History’ changed its initial political focus of explicitly combating racism and anti-Semitism to eventually become a forum for universal democratic values, while at the same time focussing on apologetic views on communism. This development corresponds to the changing hegemonic discourse on ‘Living History’, from stressing the uniqueness of the Holocaust to a view strongly influenced by totalitarianism theory.
Antisemitism and Islamophobia in Europe: the constellation as an analytic tool for the critical study of race and religion

Abstract: The steadfast assumption that racism is about skin-colour and other phenotypical features continues to fuel debates about whether antisemitism and Islamophobia are forms of racism, and if so, how to conceptualise the religious element in these forms of racism. In this article, we draw on Walter Benjamin’s notion of the “constellation” to engage with this question and provide a new analytic tool for the critical study of race. We argue that racism is a system of dehumanising hierarchical differentiation sustained through the production of elusive racial figures (“the Jew”, “the Muslim”, etc.). We contend that a racial figure should be understood as a dynamic relationship between different markers of difference, from phenotypical features to religion. By engaging with a long-term European history of antisemitism and Islamophobia, and the contemporary experiences of racialised people, we challenge simplistic distinctions between “biological” and “cultural” racism and provide a more refined definition of “racialisation”.

Learning about and from the Holocaust? On the limits of Holocaust education as civic education

Abstract: Policymakers promote Holocaust education for achieving civic and anti-racist outcomes, yet the empirical efficacy of Holocaust education is questionable. We suggest that Holocaust education remains politically popular in the USA and UK as the Holocaust’s framing as an exceptional event allows framing education as non-partisan and apolitical. However, such focus on the Holocaust as universalized, ahistorical and apolitical constitute core weaknesses as an educational device. Also, we argue that Holocaust education grounds suffering in a unique historical moment that lack clear ties to today's issues. The article suggests a more cautious reliance on Holocaust education for civic and anti-racist outcomes.

Abstract: Angesichts globaler und regionaler Entwicklungen der vergangenen Jahrzehnte steht die Gesellschaft vor erheblichen Herausforderungen wie politischer Instabilität, verschärften Konflikten, Migration, Rassismus, Diskriminierung sowie der Verbreitung von Fake News und Verschwörungserzählungen. Dabei gewinnen Extremismus, Antisemitismus, islamistische Radikalisierung und Rassismus an Bedeutung. In der Phase intensiver Persönlichkeitsentwicklung sind junge Menschen, geprägt von Unsicherheit, besonders anfällig für extremistische Überzeugungen und Handlungen. Der Drang, die eigene Identität zu formen, kombiniert mit der Suche nach einem Sinn im Leben, macht sie besonders empfänglich für Einflüsse aus ihrer sozialen Umgebung. Fehlender Zugang zu staatlichen, zivilgesellschaftlichen und familiären Unterstützungsmaßnahmen erhöht das Risiko einer Radikalisierungsspirale. Diese wird durch die Verbreitung radikaler Versprechungen über Soziale Medien und gezielte Rekrutierung in der sozialen Umgebung begünstigt. Insbesondere die Bedürfnisse und Emotionen junger Menschen werden dabei zum Ziel extremistischer Propaganda. Die Ergebnisse der Studie „IU-Kompass Extremismus“ zu antisemitischen Einstellungen bei jungen Menschen in Deutschland verdeutlichen weitverbreitete Ausprägungen dieses Phänomens. Es gilt, das Bewusstsein für menschenverachtende Ideologien zu schärfen und Jugendliche mit den nötigen Werkzeugen auszustatten, um diese Phänomene zu erkennen, zu benennen und aktiv dagegen vorzugehen.

Abstract: Antisemitismus und gruppenbezogene Menschenfeindlichkeit untergraben das Zu-sammenleben in einer demokratischen Zivilgesellschaft. Deswegen gehört die Prävention gegen Antisemitismus, Islam- und Fremdenfeindlichkeit zu den Bildungsaufgaben der Schu-le aber auch speziell des Religionsunterrichts.
