Jedan od postignutih zaključaka jest da još nepotpuno definirana manjinska politika proizvodi model korekcije državnih akcija kao rezultata prosvjeda židovske zajednice i istovremenog iskazivanja volje za suradnjom. Odnosi židovske zajednice i države definiraju se i "u hodu".

Gender and depression in Anglo-Jewry

Abstract: This study found similar prevalence of case depression among men as among women in a sample of 339 Jews affiliated to orthodox synagogues (157 men and 182 women). There were significant gender differences in several social–situational factors and symptoms, mostly in the direction that would suggest that case depression would be higher among women than among men. That this was not so is suggested to be the result of the cultural milieu: social factors that have been found to be associated with depression in other groups of people did not function as risk or vulnerability factors among the Jews studied. In particular, the evidence indicates the importance of specific cultural–religious values in contributing towards the prevalences that were observed. These values included the esteem attached to women's central role in family management and the low use of alcohol and suicide as escape routes from depression.

Regarding religious antisemitism, the official position of the Orthodox Church recognizes Judaism's contribution to Christianity and condemns antisemitism, but some in the Church exhibit anti-Jewish sentiments, hiding behind opposition to Zionists and Chiliasts (Jehovah's Witnesses). Greeks often confuse the terms Israelis, Zionists, and Jews. Abstract: This paper focuses on the psychological experience of children who were separated from their parents because they sent them to England to save their lives from the impending Holocaust in continental Europe. The parents of these children expressed their love and concern to ensure their offspring's survival through the self‐sacrificial act of parting with them. What they could not prevent were the traumatic effects of this separation and its sequellae. Drawing on clinical material of former Kindertransportees as adults from her private practice and group work with a colleague, Ruth Barnett offers an understanding of the psychic journey that was imposed on these children by the deliberately inflicted atrocities to which their families and communities were subjected in the name of genocide and for the purpose of ‘ethnic cleansing’. She hopes this may be of some value to therapists working with the victims of similar attempts at ‘ethnic cleansing’ such as perpetrated in Rwanda and Bosnia.

Abstract: Testimonials of miraculous healing offered by Lubavitch Hasidim evoke images of exile and restitution which derive from Kabbalistic texts. Mediated practically through the person of the Rebbe, these testimonials articulate both immediate affliction and ultimate meaning, physical embodiment as well as symbolic representation, each constituting the other. Both Kabbalah and medical anthropology attempt to transcend not dissimilar epistemological dualisms: those characteristic of monotheism and contemporary science. Yet the ‘lower root’ of Kabbalah affirms a material reality known through immediate sensory experience which recalls the rationale of biomedicine.

Abstract: The analysis provided in this paper is based on the sociological research I made on the turn of 1988 and 1989. The study was focused on a typological analysis. The empirical material consisted of several non-structured, narrative-type interviews with individuals selected for the study. My interlocutors were 25 people born as Poles, brought up and still living in Poland, surrounded by Polish culture, and being at the same time of Jewish origins. In the course of these conversations the people I was talking to chose themselves to underline and "uncover" the problems related to their identity. My aim, rather than a mere description of the selected group, was to reconstruct the ways in which the interviewees formed and interpreted their own identities in connection with their "Jewish" and "Polish" identifications. I focused my attention not on the collective identity of the chosen category of individuals but rather on the individual sense of identity of its members. Do these people identify with their Jewishness (and/or Polishness) in similar ways? Do they resemble each other in respect of that particular, specific aspect of their social identity? These are some of the questions I tried to answer in my study.

Abstract: There are over 50,000 Jews in Germany today. They live there, they work there, they raise families there. Few have German ancestry, more, but by no means all, have German citizenship. For the most part relative newcomers - postwar and to a growing extent, post-Wall arrivals - at first they considered themselves to be in transit, on their way to someplace else. Abstract: This is the first book to examine an emerging new German Jewish culture that has become visible since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Shoah seemed to have erased the historical Jewish presence in German culture. Since the late 1980s, however, a once-silent and therefore relatively invisible Jewish community of the victims of the Shoah has been restructuring itself, as a new generation of German Jews enters the mainstream of German cultural life. Sander L. Gilman surveys the recent explosion of works by creative artists who invoke their Jewish identity and place at the center of their art the question of what it means to be a Jew in contemporary Germany. After introducing this new generation of German Jewish novelists, dramatists, film makers, and critics, Gilman analyzes the critical reception of the novels of Rafael Seligmann and Esther Dischereit, two of the most interesting younger writers. A chapter is devoted to the issue of visibility or invisibility as it is inscribed in the representation of the Jewish body in contemporary German Jewish culture. The book concludes with a study of the central role of gender in the structuring of Jewish identity and the author's observations on the complexities of life in the present-day German Jewish Diaspora.

Abstract: This absorbing book of interviews takes one to the heart of modern German Jewish history. Of the eleven German Jews interviewed, four are from West Berlin, and seven are from East Berlin. The interviews provide an exceptionally varied and intimate portrait of Jewish experience in twentieth-century Germany. There are first-hand accounts of the Weimar Republic, the Nazi era, the Holocaust, and the divided Germany of the Cold War era. There are also vivid descriptions of the new united Germany, with its alarming resurgence of xenophobia and anti-Semitism. Some of the men and women interviewed affirm their dual German and Jewish identities with vigor. There is the West Berliner, for instance, who proclaims, "I am a German Jew. I want to live here." Others describe the impossibility of being both German and Jewish: "I don't have anything in common with the whole German people." Many confess to profound ambivalence, such as the East Berliner who feels that he is neither a native nor a foreigner in Germany: "If someone asks me, 'Who are you?' then I can only say, 'I am a fish out of water.'" Abstract: During the 20th century, estimates of the British Jewish population have been obtained by applying appropriate death-rates to communal mortality data. This death-rate method has become increasingly sophisticated with respect to the death-rates used. The exercise reported here covers more than 22 000 deaths recorded in the community over the 5-year period. These indicate a Jewish female:male death ratio about 3% higher than that of England and Wales. An estimate of 308 000 is suggested for the community, in which deaths-related data are augmented by information about births within the community.

The Impact of Varieties of Jewish Education upon Jewish Identity: an Inter-Generational Perspective

Abstract: This study assesses the impact of several forms of Jewish education upon composite measures of Jewish identity for teenagers and for their parents. The analysis controls for each generation's parents' Jewishness as well as for other factors. All forms of Jewish education, except Sunday school, are associated with higher levels of Jewish identity in both generations. The putative effects of day school, including non-Orthodox day schools, are especially pronounced. Among adults, all forms of Jewish education, except Sunday school, are associated with lower rates of intermarriage. The likely impact of youth groups, Israel travel on intermarriage rates are rather small.

Yet, he argues that any such mood of introspection has been noticeably absent from the organized Jewish community since November 1994, when a new Republican majority came to power in both houses of Congress on the basis of a Contract With America. That "contract," among other things, runs counter to the fundamental approaches of Jewish public policy, with its decades-long tradition of endorsing government spending on social problems and its unquestioning faith in the proverbial "wall of separation" between church and state. But instead of pondering the sagacity of a position so out of sync with the mood of the country, the established organizations, after recovering from their stunned disappointment at the election results, have pledged themselves to combat the Contract With America. Abstract: The Association of Jewish Community Organization Personnel enhances the professional status of federation and other community organization professionals by disseminating information about job opportunities, advocating for advancement for women professionals, developing a Code of Ethics, providing counseling for those having difficulties in their workplace, and urging the improvement of benefits. Today, when Jewish continuity is an important part of federations' missions, a partnership among CJF, local federations, and AJCOP and the JCSA should be created to develop a common set of practice standards and continuing education curricula to enable professionals to best fulfill their responsibilities.
