Abstract

The author discusses the sounds of the contemporary synagogue as it has changed over time -- the decline of traditional nusach (prayer style), the inclusion of new melodies, the ascending standards for chanting Torah, the dynamics of decorum, unauthorized chatter and shushing, and other sounds to be found in the beit knesset (synagogue, house of gathering).
