Abstract

The author reflects on the life and contributions of Hillel Zeitlin, who perished in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942. He asserts that Zeitlin was a scholar, journalist, poet, polemicist, mystic and even prophet, inspiring Abraham Joshua Heschel and Zalman Schachter-Shalomi He concludes that Zeitlin personifies the tension within which Jewish spirituality finds itself: a world drenched in spirit but enveloped in the dross of materialism.
