Abstract
The author describes how he came to Jewish musical traditions as an adult and as a secular Jew. He asserts that the great klezmorim of the past had been cherished most of all for their lyrical, contemplative, and moralizing renditions of prayer tunes such as Kol Nidre and El Mole Rahamim. He concludes that the collision of the archaic with the modern lifestyle puzzles and draws him, catching him in the grey area between these two realms.
