Abstract
The authors examine Dr. Shlomo Bardin's model of informal Jewish education (IJE) as practiced at the Brandeis Collegiate Institute (BCI), to determine its value as measured by Dr. Barry Chazan's eight criteria (as formalized in "The Philosophy of Informal Jewish Education", 2001). Because Dr. Bardin introduced BCI long before the concept of IJE was common in Jewish educational dialogue, the authors argue that this successful program demonstrates the inherent value of IJE by showing the proven long-term benefits of stand-alone IJE programs that need no linkage to formalized Jewish education to make a significant impact on Jewish identity and affiliation.
