The main purpose of this chapter is to provide some historical-sociological perspective to the discussion of Jewish identity. Some of the major structural characteristics of world Jewry will be examined at a distance of ninety years. We draw some comparisons about the sociodemographic profile of world Jewry at the beginning an the close of the 20th century.
