Abstract

This discussion, held on 12 July 2023 at the Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism in Munich, focused on the relationship between antisemitism and racism. This relationship has become increasingly politicised. This was by no means always the case, on the contrary: after 1945 the two terms were used almost synonymously and thought of together. The conversation is stimulated by two initial reflections: the historian Stefanie Schüler-Springorum and the migration researcher Manuela Bojadžijev shed light on the development of both concepts in theory and practice in Germany. This is followed by a discussion with Mirjam Zadoff, Director of the Documentation Centre on the History of National Socialism in Munich, and Michael Brenner, Professor of Jewish History and Culture at the University of Munich. We are pleased to present this discussion as part of our special issue “The Racism Debate in Germany”.
