Abstract: Ritual slaughter thus became both a test case for how modern societies contend with what are often considered socially deviant religious practices, and a challenge for the accepted range of tolerance. As I will demonstrate in this article, the ways in which ritual slaughter was or was not tolerated were an expression of the arrangement of religion in society. Changing ideological and political views of the role of religion, and consequently of attitudes towards religious minorities, immediately influenced the status of ritual slaughter. I will concentrate on one case study: the treatment of ritual slaughter in Dutch society from the start of the twentieth century until the recent debates in 2011

Abstract: Met de publicatie van dit boek wordt een venster toegevoegd aan de ‘canon van de geschiedenis van de joden in Nederland. Hierin wordt verteld en geanalyseerd hoe een gedecimeerde en uitgesloten groep de kracht vond om zich te herstellen en zich met een veelzijdige identiteit te manifesteren. Van een tweedelig orthodox en liberaal, gebonden of vrij is geen sprake. Vele beschouwen zich als jood en zijn daar trots op, ook als de band met de joodse religie gering is of niet bestaat. Voor de schakeringen die er zijn, worden in dit boek en de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in het Joods Historisch Museum (JHM) verklaringen gegeven. Zij vormen de basis voor verder onderzoek en reflectie.
