Abstract
We conceptualize motivations to emigrate as expressions of basic motivations in the context of emigration. We propose three theoretically distinct motivations to emigrate: preservation (physical, social, and psychological security), self-development (personal growth in abilities, knowledge, and skills), and materialism (financial wellbeing, wealth). We validate this typology in a sample of 158 potential Jewish emigrants from Russia with confirmatory factor analysis of reasons to emigrate. Each motivation correlates, as hypothesized, with the basic values theorized to underlie it. The relative importance of the motivations and their associations with preferred destination of immigration, group identifications, subjective wellbeing, and economic situation are also largely consistent with hypotheses. We discuss the generalizability of these motivations for understanding emigration in settings around the world.

Cet article propose une théorie des motivations à émigrer comme étant des motivations fondamentales dans le contexte d'émigration. Cette théorie distingue trois types de motivation à émigrer: la préservation (la sécurité physique, sociale et psychologique), la réalisation de soi (développement personnel de ses competences, connaissances et talents) et la matérialisme (bien-être financier, richesse). Cette typologie a été validée par une analyse factorielle confirmatoire concernant les raisons pour émigrer, sur un échantillon de 158 juifs de Russie, susceptibles d'émigrer. Conformément à l'hypothèse, chacune des motivations est corrélée aux valeurs fondamentales qui la sous-tendent théoriquement. L'importance respective des motivations, tout comme l'association de ces motivations à la destination d'émigration souhaitée, aux identifications à certains groupes, au bien-être subjectif ainsi qu'aux conditions économiques, sont en grande partie cohérente avec les hypothèses. Nous avançons que ces motivations seraient générales et pourraient permettre de comprendre l'émigration dans les différents contextes partout dans le monde.
