Abstract
The author outlines the history of persecution of the Roma in Europe, including their subjection to forced labor or expulsion, enslavement, forcible and permanent removal of children, and their genocidal suffering during the Second World War. Parallels are drawn between the histories of Antigypsyism and Antisemitism. The author focuses on the contemporary situation of Roma in various European countries. The paper also records the new measures being introduced at national and European levels, both by newly formed Roma organizations and by governmental and voluntary bodies.The paper includes a number of recommendations for further policy initiatives on behalf of Roma.
