Abstract
The authors examine two aspects of a commonly expressed idea: that American Jews are more liberal than non-Jewish Americans, and that this liberalism derives from traditional Jewish values. After examining evidence from a survey of American social attitudes conducted by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC), the authors find that while American Jews are more liberal than other groups in certain selective ways, there is no evidence to suggest that this derives from traditional Jewish teachings.
