Abstract

The author discusses the religious and political forces that contributed to the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and argues for the importance of distinguishing between two charges: that religious circles were complicit in Rabin's murder and the charge that, whereas all Israeli Jews were in some way responsible, the religious sector, the national-religious sector or the right wing shared a greater degree of responsibility. Ultimately, he fails to agree with either statement, arguing that the Jewish underground's activity, the murders committed by Baruch Goldstein and the extremist rhetoric which the leaders of the religious right condoned, is only remotely connected to the assassination of Rabin.
