Antisemitism in Higher Education in the United Kingdom: Jewish Students’ Experiences since October 7, 2023

Abstract
This study presents the findings of a comprehensive survey of Jewish students at UK universities at the end of the 2023–2024 academic year (n = 497). Respondents reported witnessing many more antisemitic incidents after than before October 7. Furthermore, the greater the number of antisemitic incidents that students personally experienced and witnessed, the more people and spaces they avoided on campus due to antisemitism; the greater their concerns about antisemitism on campus; the more they felt unsafe on cam-pus; and the greater the negative effects of antisemitism on their studies, wellbeing and campus life. Students’ own words are highlighted in the open-ended responses, emphasizing the verbal abuse, physical attacks, intimidation, exclusion, and isolation they experi-enced, hinting at profound negative effects on their mental health.Together, these findings underscore the pressing need to combat the surge in antisemitism across UK universities, for example, by creating and enforcing clear codes of conduct for staff and students to re-duce experiences and expressions of antisemitism,
