Abstract

Definition of and Concepts in the official Jewish national minority in the ratification process of the ‘Framework Convention on the Protection of National Minorities’ are investigated. The investigation is based on the theory of multiculturalism and ‘nation, state & nationalism’ discourse to conceptualize official documents released in the ratification process. The analysis of the Jewish minority is based on the comments of representatives and their foundation in the opinions of the Jewish minority expressed in the survey on “Jewish life in Norway“. To compare the two definitions and find out if there is a discrepancy between the official Norwegian Jewish minority definition, the Jewish national minority representatives’ group definition and the Jewish minority’s self-understanding is the aim of the thesis. Some remarks on group labelling and the good it does to the creation of a diverse and equal liberal-democratic society will be the ending note.
