Abstract:
This article discusses the violent protest at Makhachkala airport organized by Islamists aiming to prevent Israelis from coming to Dagestan, using the lens of modern antisemitism theories. The research was based on fieldwork in Makhachkala as well as content analysis of Dagestani Telegram channels. The analysis shows that the protest was inspired by anti-Israeli attitudes, similar to those of the far left, and was not directed against local Jews. The violent nature of the protest was not anticipated by the organizers, who lost control of the mob. The violence is partly explained by the lack of peaceful protest opportunities.
