Abstract:
The author analyzes European Jewry in conjunction with the American and Israeli Jewish communities in order to assert that the Jewish community in Europe, deeply scarred by the Shoah (Holocaust), is very diverse and ambiguous. The author classifies the Jewish identity of America as privatized and the identity of Israel as nationalized, with European Jewish identity as somewhat a middle ground between the two. By assessing hallmarks of European history and how they shaped European Jewish identity, the author concludes that European Jewry possesses a certain subtlety, maturity, and humility that will revitalize its presence in Europe.
