Abstract: The purpose of the present article is to provide an analysis of the problems of Russian Jewry. As one of Russia's many ethnic groups and, moreover, a dispersed group, Jews have their own specific problems in addition to the problems that are common to the country's population at large. This is evident, in particular, in the mass emigration of Jews from Russia once travel restrictions were lifted in the late eighties. The scale of Jewish emigration has been of such a magnitude that the likelihood that all Jews will leave Russia, their Exodus, has become a quite realistic possibility. This situation requires a scientific analysis. First it will be useful to determine how many Jews there are in Russia, and who may be considered a Jew.
