Resistive Play: Sports and the Emergence of Jewish Visibility in Contemporary Vienna
Author(s):
Bunzl, Matti
Date:
2000
Topics:
Main Topic: Other, Sports, Jewish Identity, Ethnography
Abstract:
n this article, the author argues that the current Jewish sports movement exemplifies and symbolizes a “new Jewish visibility” in Vienna’s sociocultural field. It is thus part and parcel of a larger recent transformation that has brought Jewish individuals, collectivities, and institutions into Austria’s public sphere. Drawing on his ethnographic research on postwar Austrian-Jewish culture, the author argues that sport represents a privileged site in this development through its construction of an affirmative public Jewish subjectivity, negotiated, in turn, in light of the social reality of a recently expanding Jewish community.
