Abstract: I recently became interested in the grossgemeinde Orthodox rabbis of pre-war Germany, and I hope to publish a full length scholarly article on them soon. During my research it occurred to me that they provide a model for Orthodox Jews today in their relations with non-Orthodox Jewish movements. In Britain this matter has centred on the annual Limmud Conference. I have therefore written the essay below as a contribution to the debate. '
