Abstract:
The article presents the results of a field study carried out within the framework of the project “Family Heirlooms and Jewish Memory,” which resulted in the organisation of an exhibition at the State Museum of the History of Religion in St Petersburg. On the basis of interviews collected from the owners of the heirlooms, the article examines relations between owner and object, as well as the practices of storage and the presentation of such things. These practices are defined as a particular channel of existence for family memory, which plays an important role in the construction of Jewish identity on the basis of ancestry.
