Abstract: Surveying the relationships of Jews in France, this essay examines how French ideas of the nation have influenced self-definitions among French Jews. The essay also analyzes contemporary intellectual figures such as Alain Badiou on the the so-called “Jewish question” and aims to show the dangers of totalizing the name Jew.
