Abstract:
Is it justified for modern-day Russia to portray itself as a bulwark against antisemitism and Holocaust denial? This may ring true, to a certain extent, with respect to Holocaust denial, given the fact that the country bore the brunt of the war against Nazi Germany, of which the Holocaust was an integral part. It may be harder to argue when it comes to antisemitism, specifically state-sponsored anti-Jewish discrimination and violence, which had a long history in Russia. This chapter examines contemporary trends in official Russian posturing about antisemitism and Holocaust denial. I situate these trends within the context of the Russian and Soviet past and current entanglements between Russia and the West, with a special emphasis on Israel.
