Abstract:
The aim of this research report was to offer an overview and analysis of the function of the Lauder schools of Prague, the only Jewish day school in the Czech Republic, at the end of academic year 2004-5. The Lauder schools of Prague are a complex of an elementary/junior high school ('Gur Arie') and a high school ('Or Chadash') which were established in 1997 and 1999 respectively, following the founding initiative of the Chief Rabbi of the Czech Republic, Rabbi Karol Efraim Sidon. The schools were a joint project of the Jewish Community of Prague (JCP) and The Ronald S. Lauder foundation. The paper explores the birth pains of the institution, its achievements and failures. It shows how the lack of basic conception and clear vision at the beginning negatively influenced its early development; and what impact the political situation at the JCC had on the school's life. The paper offers several suggestions for taking steps to correct these mistakes, for the future of the school.
