Contesting religious space: spatiality, religion, and identity-making among Jews in Trondheim

Abstract: Building on current research into space and religion, this article explores how religious identity is negotiated in the small Modern Orthodox Jewish community in the Norwegian city of Trondheim. The focus is on Jews who question the synagogue as an Orthodox site with its strict definitions of who has access to the religious services and sections of the synagogue, which reflects the ongoing construction of Jewish identity among Jews in Trondheim. Three significant factors constitute this negotiation: loyalty towards the first generations of Jewish immigrants who established the Orthodox tradition in Trondheim and founded an Orthodox congregation, the desire to create a congregation that lives up to the contemporary ideal of gender equality, the desire to be affiliated with a congregation for those who identify as Jews. This article argues that the way religious space is contested has much to say about the way Jewish identity is currently understood in the Nordic countries. A focus on space and place also proves useful when analysing religious identity in Europe more generally.

Abstract: This chapter examines the connection between Jewish identity and place in a Jewish community. The focus is on the Jewish cemetery in Trondheim, in the central part of Norway, and the aim is to explore how Jewish identity affects preferences for cemetery space. Against the backdrop of a larger ethnographic study and national research project, this study tracks narratives about burial decisions, illuminating the confluence of Jewish identity and Jewish burial space. The way the Jewish cemetery may mobilize or immobilize Jewish identity and belonging to the Jewish community is a multifaceted subject that relates to such wider experiences as mobility, relations to places of origin and Jewish networks. As discussed in the chapter, several aspects, religion, the Holocaust, and their Jewish kin relations, are in play for the participants and contribute to negotiating their burial decision.

Abstract: Jewish family life has undergone great structural changes during the almost150 years that Jewish families
have lived in Norway. From the time in 1860 when the first family settled in Drammen till today, the Second
World War, which halved the Jewish population, has been the most significant factor negatively influencing
the continuity of Jewish family life. Other structural factors have been fewer siblings and that mixed
marriages and divorce have become more common. Although the Jewish family has undergone great
changes during the last generations and has become more like other families, it is still the most significant
component of Jewish identity. The article is based on a study of interviews in the fall 1992 with 18
Norwegian Jews between 25 and 50 years old and living in Oslo and Trondheim. The study shows that
Jewish social life takes place first and foremost through the family and to a lesser extent through Jewish
friends and Jewish organisations. In their own homes Norwegian Jews choose to let Jewish traditions
influence their family life in some ways. Even though new ways of life such as mixed marriages and
cohabitation with non-Jews have made it more difficult to preserve Jewish values and become involved in
Jewish activities, Norwegian Jews have managed to create Jewish homes, to give their children a Jewish
upbringing and to carry on some of their rituals according to the orthodox tradition.
