Music and dance beyond boundaries? Emphasizing Muslim–Jewish North African commonalities, avoiding politics

Abstract: This article argues that the Parisian spheres of Middle Eastern dance and Mediterranean music shape distinct Muslim-Jewish encounters for individuals involved in these practices, fostering a coexistence among artists from Muslim and Jewish backgrounds which involves carefully navigating tensions over geopolitical issues. Three key findings emerge from this study. First, respondents of Muslim and Jewish backgrounds shared a common Maghrebi heritage that was reappropriated by engaging in the practices of Middle Eastern dance and Mediterranean music. Second, these artistic encounters were not immune to instances of stigmatization and tensions, particularly relating to geopolitical issues, which reactivated symbolic boundaries between artists of Muslim and Jewish backgrounds. Third, participants employed strategies to avoid conflict, explicitly separating art from politics, and fostered mutual respect for differing perspectives. Nevertheless, some respondents politicized Muslim-Jewish commonalities, notably by reaffirming their shared Maghrebi heritage.

Abstract: Hiphop gilt als die einflussreichste Jugendkultur der Gegenwart. Im Subgenre Gangsta-Rap zählen hypermaskuline und misogyne Machtfantasien zu den Leitmotiven in der Selbstinszenierung der meist männlichen Künstler. In ihren Liedtexten und Musikvideos vermitteln sie autoritäre Moral- und Gesellschaftsvorstellungen, in denen häufig auch verschwörungsideologische und antisemitische Interpretationen globaler Herrschaftsverhältnisse zum Vorschein treten. Die Studie liefert erstmals belastbare empirische Daten zur Frage, ob und wie diese über den Gangsta-Rap vermittelten Ideologien auf die Wahrnehmung und das Denken von Jugendlichen einwirken können.

Abstract: Das Buch aus der Reihe „Antisemitismus und Bildung“ beschäftigt sich mit Bildungsveranstaltungen des Rappers Ben Salomo zum Thema Antisemitismus im deutschen Rap an Schulen. Antisemitismus ist ein Problem im deutschsprachigen Rap, einer besonders bei Jugendlichen beliebten Musikrichtung. Populäre Rap-Songs transportieren immer wieder antisemitische Feindbilder. Die Studie skizziert Bildungsveranstaltungen entlang ihrer pädagogischen Zielsetzung zwischen Sensibilisierung für jüdische Perspektiven und Wissensvermittlung und ordnet ihre Wirkungen ein. Dabei werden Gelingensbedingungen schulischer Antisemitismusprävention herausgearbeitet. Die Bildungsveranstaltungen wurden mit Mitteln der Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit durchgeführt.
A Netnographic Approach to Antisemitism in the Context of the Cultural Boycott Campaign #DJs for Palestine

Abstract: In 2018 and 2021, the Berlin club scene saw cancel culture clashes in connection with the DJs for Palestine (DJP) boycott campaign, which follows the agenda of the BDS move-ment. I was interested in the discussions about the clashes on social media and want-ed to find out to what extent the argumentation in favor of the DJP boycott campaign reproduces antisemitism. To discuss my findings, I used the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism (JDA). The results of my analysis of the pro-boycott voices on social media show that they positioned themselves in an ideologized and Manichaean manner against Israel and Zionism. People who argued against the boycott were singled out and accused of being white supremacists. In their social media posts, the boycott supporters created a hegemonic and exclusionary space and staged themselves as gatekeepers of human rights. Analysis of the posts with key words from the JDA guidelines delineated in section C as not antisemitic per se show that this judgement has to be rejected in the case of the present study. The critique that is formulated is in most cases destructive and neither balanced nor a qualified approach to a complex situation. What is especially missing is a recognition of how criticism of Zionism or Israel can be loaded with antisemitic tropes. Instead of such recognition, there is denial of antisemitism or counter-accusation. There are dogmatic speech, unilateral blame and defensiveness, but most of the time no reference to contra-dictions and ambivalences towards the boycott campaign and the DJs for Palestine agenda.

Abstract: (Black) Metal rezipiert eine Bricolage aus Satanismus, (nord-)germanischen Mythen, völkischer Weltanschauung und Nietzsches Philosophie des „Übermenschen“. Dabei lassen sich im Umgang mit dem altnordischen Mythos unterschiedliche Muster erkennen. Der (scheinbar) intentionslosen, ›trivialen‹ Inszenierung als ›Wikinger‹ samt der Verwendung von cultural icons (›Karnevalisierung‹) stehen ambitioniertere, um Authentizität bemühte Projekte als eine (völkisch-antisemitisch aufgeladene) Neuromantik gegenüber, deren Inhalte viele Momente des völkischen Antisemitismus aufweisen.
In allen Spielarten hat der Rückgriff auf die ›eigene‹ Geschichte und vermeintlich unverfremdete Kultur eine identitätsbildende Kraft, die über die Identifikation mit der ›germanischen Kultur‹ ein positives Selbstbild entwirft und als ultimatives Feindbild „das Jüdische“ impliziert. Dieser Dialogizität von Antisemitismus als „negativer Leitidee“ und ›Germantentum‹-Konstruktionen gehen die Beiträge dieses Bandes nach.

Abstract: Jews and Gypsies are marginal men in the cultural topographies of Europe. During the past 25 years, both minorities underwent a process of festivalization. Jewish Culture Festivals and Klezmer music as well as Gypsy Music Festivals and Balkan Beats became highly popular. Jewish and Gypsy spaces were established and serve as tourist borderzones for the encounters of "Europeans" with their exoticized Other. A new European folklore emerges, successfully blending kitsch and terror, remembrance and the romanticized nomadism of post-modern lifestyles. Two case studies of the Jewish Culture Festival in Kazimierz and the Gypsy pilgrimage to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer reveal telling asymmetries. After 1989, the imaginary Jews were located in the former Jewish districts of Central European cities such as Cracow, Prague and Budapest or Czernowitz. The Holocaust became the foundation of a common European culture of remembrance, a new European tradition. Gypsies are revered as musicians, yet reviled as people. The very same regions of Jewish encoded "Central Europe" shifted eastward on the mental maps as soon as the Roma were concerned. Europeans are in fear of a Roma "invasion" from the East. The European ambivalence towards its Others is symptomatic of a community striving to imagine itself. In this process, to have or have not a common European history plays a pivotal role. The imaginary Jews seem to embody a common multicultural "European" past, whilst the Roma "come from India". They are represented as belly-dancing Orientals and used for drawing boundaries excluding non-Europeans.

Abstract: Juden haben immer – auch in Zeiten des Ghettos – mit ihrer Umwelt kulturell interagiert. Dies zeigt sich auch in den musikalischen Traditionen der balkanischen jüdischen Gemeinden, die vereinzelt kaum erforscht wurden. Der Wandel des jüdischen Musiklebens im liturgischen und säkularen Raum wird hier exemplarisch am Beispiel der jüdischen Gemeinde Belgrads veranschaulicht. In dieser Stadt sind wegen ihrer bewegten Geschichte und des häufigen politischen Machtwechsels auf dem Balkan die Verschmelzung verschiedener kultureller Einflüsse zu finden, von denen die Juden, bereits geprägt von ihrer aschkenasischen und sephardischen Herkunft, betroffen waren. Mit der vorliegenden Fallstudie, in der Fragestellung wie deren methodische Durchführung und Umsetzung interdisziplinär angelegt sind, wird ein Desideratum der jüdischen Musikforschung auf dem Balkan erfüllt. Die Autorin nähert sich musikwissenschaftlich und judaistisch dem musikalischen Gut der Belgrader Gemeinde, indem sie es in ihrem kulturgeschichtlichen Kontext mit Blick auf den historischen Wandel und auf das soziale Umfeld erforscht sowie das Kernrepertoire der gegenwärtigen synagogalen Schabbatabend- und Morgengebete in der Gesamtheit ihrer musikalischen Abläufe darstellt.
