Abstract

Based on the 1971 and 1990 National Jewish Population Surveys, the authors identify and analyze the general social, economic, and demographic characteristics of Jews according to their religious affiliations. They focus on the following issues: how choice and synagogue affiliation relates to other aspects of Jewish behavior; what changes have occurred in the 20-year period between the surveys; the extent to which individuals change denominational affiliation from childhood to adulthood; and the role of intermarriage. The article concludes with some thoughts about the future size and composition of each denomination.
