Kirotus uuë Balti jiidissit taagaq sama ala pääl kynõldavidõ leedu, läti, eesti
ni baltiúaksa keele kontekstin. Balti jiidiú om põâahummogujiidisi murdidõ

The current article describes Baltic Yiddish (BY) within a broader regional
context, including co-territorial varieties of Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian,
and Baltic German. BY is usually referred to as a northern area within the
north-eastern Yiddish dialects that is characterized by the retention of certain
older features: opposition of short/long vowels, preservation of au, a stable
distribution of Accusative in the singular defi nite articles and of Dative
in personal pronouns, etc. The ultimate northern border of BY coincides
with the northern border of Estonia. In Latvia, Courland Yiddish (CoY)
that belongs to BY, and in Lithuania Zameter Yiddish (ZY) is spoken. It is impossible to draw clear eastern borders of ZY and CoY. Rather, there
are several continua, for instance, soft l in the West becomes harder as one
moves to the East. This resembles a similar development in the Lithuanian
dialects of Northern Žemaitija. There are several phenomena with regional
distribution, for instance, gemination of obstruents in Estonian Yiddish (EY)
and the same in Estonian, Baltic German, the Tamian dialects of Latvian (coterritorial
with CoY). The realization of the historical diphthong *au in CoY
as au and in ZY as ou was postulated in classical studies by Weinreich and
Mark; however, the quality of the fi rst component may not be so clear since
EY has au ~ åu, and the same is true about several co-territorial varieties:
the Estonian Insular dialect, Baltic German, the Tamian dialects, and the
Lithuanian dialects of Northern Žemaitija. Although the origins of the
diphthong in the latter dialect differ from those in other mentioned varieties,
the similar realization is relevant for the regional perspective. The popular
concept of BY in Estonia is narrower than the linguistic one. For the speakers
of EY, the Yiddish dialects of Lithuanian differ signifi cantly due to an alleged
high number of Russian lexical items.
